Intro/new member

HI all, if your a Porsche person or even Audi for that matter you may have seen me on the respective forms (Rennlist, 6speedonline, audizine, etc). Hopefully taking delivery of an 04' CS (r53) this week. Has 105k on the ODO, 6-speed, heated p-leather seats (in very good nick), H/K sound, dark blue in color, looks to be in very nice shape...

two things not so nice, the air intake/ intercooler thing is loose on the hood (piece around the scoop surround) is this common, an easy fix, etc?

Secondly (I did do some research) the rear hatch will not open, any DIY to replace the whole switch, not just the micro switch/rebuild DIY I saw a bit ago. Is this a common issue as well?

I've test drove 3 manual cooper S's recently, the clutch throw (if you will) seems super short on all, is this normal, or a sign the clutch is going? Or am I just used to my Porsche's (currently 996 Aero car, also had a few others in manuals) which have longer engagement swings on the pedal. I also found the pedals to be too small to nicely heel-toe, aftermarket pedals popular?

Thanks for the help. I hope for a long time around the Mini community.

62 views and no welcome even? Even us Porsche guys are less stuck up than that

Anyways bump, any help would be great...this seems to be the most active forum for Mini's. I'll post pics tonight when I take delivery.

Welcome! I haven't had any probe with the hood thing and my clutch was replaced before I bought my '05 S last October. Runs like a champ. going auto crossing at the Michelin test track Saturday.

We'll expect some pics when you get it.

Motor on!

Welcome to NAM! I joined not to long ago and have recently bought my first mini so it's nice to see others buying mini's as well!

As far as the rear hatch do you have a key with the pressable logo button? That should unlock the hatch. I'm not sure about the switch you are talking about and I have no idea if there is a button inside of the car as I have not found one yet.

I was just razzing ya guys. Glad to see some responses though. I didn't try pressing the button on the key, just made sure the locked where not locked from the inside and tried to open from the lift gate. Is this something you have to use the key for?

My s8 (i'm trading for the mini) is like that, only the key will open the truck as there are no buttons on the trunk lid.

So far this is the only way I have found to open the trunk...Also if you press and hold that button all windows go down and the sun roof goes back

Welcome to NAM! Unfortunately, we don't have a DIY article on the rear hatch switch but I've seen it discussed here before. We have several articles you may browse for future projects here. Still plan to take delivery this week?

Thanks, my key isn't programmed to make the windows and sun roof open/close. I'll see if the dealer will do that.

The PO or dealer that took the trade in removed the license place mounting bracket, so my plate is screwed in with one screw and I am waiting for the MINI's part dept to call...I bought mine at a Chevy dealer.

I was able to open the hatch by the pull cord (but I have to push the hatch open from the inside, I cannot lift the gate from the outside. So I'll need to look into that more.

Pics soon (tonight). The paint is not very good, very dull so I'll try my best to restore it, there is some chip filler that got sanded down, half *** job for lack of a better word. But plenty of history and mechanically its one of the better ones I've drove (while on my hunt).

Welcome!!
The more specific the question....the smaller the audience....
Trunk handle issue...yes..semi common... If the rubber switch covering the button is OK...you might be able to clean/lube it, and install a new gasket BEHIND the unit and reinstall, and be OK.
The 6 speed in mini's is fairly short...and many cars have been modified with a short throw shifter....haven't driven any of the cars you reference though.
As for the hoodscoop/intercooler....sounds like a prior owner had a different one on...and did a crappy job going back to stock....
Realoem.com has lots of skematics of different parts...check to see if it is all there...
The hood scoop should seal to the intercooler diverter...both should be tight and sealed.

P.S.
Look under the rear seat cushion...
The SHOULD be a cable there you can yank as an alternate trunk opener...that way if the battery dies...you can still get at it!!

Thanks, yeah the release works well.

The clutch just feels really light and short, bare in mind I'm used to a 911 clutch that engages about 6 in (which is about mid throw if you will) and a few more to completely disengage. I may be exaggerating on the length of the throw but it is at least double the MINIs.

This weekend I'll be teaching my gf how to drive a manual, now that I have a car with an easy manual lol...hopefully she doesn't ruin the clutch too bad.

Labor to change a mini clutch is a killer....about 8+ hrs...typically around $1500-2000 when a single mass clutch is installed, about $+600 more when a stock type dual mass is used.....the subframe on the s has to be dropped...SOMETIMES a non s can be done in place on a lift...But not an s.....

ECS thank you so much, this helps drastically! I really like the CF JCW one...

do you have the roof/upper door trim (just above the A-piller) in stock by chance? It is the metal piece with a slight bend going from the side to the windshield about 3-4 in long.

Welcome!
You will find a great deal of helpful info here.

My R53 has 130,000 and I have had some dealings with various repairs.

Check Out:
Strut Mount Towers for mushrooming.
Power Steering pump for noise and possible failure.
Crank Pulley for separation. I replaced mine with an ATI unit.
Passenger top motor mount.
Belt tensioner failure.

My rear hatch handle has had problems. If any moisture gets in there it will short.

Good Luck with your new Cooper

Thanks , the CF one looks awesome.

Its part of the long strip , I call it the ear above the A pillar. There is a left ( driver 51137112079 and a right Passenger side 51137112080
. Don't know which one you need. They are both explained in the thread with other common parts
