Newb help please

Hey minigunners,

So I've been wanting "colder" air and have been searching around the forum and online and haven't found someone trying to do what I want to do. I'll attach a picture of my current setup. Basically I want to run the intake to my hood scoop. Now, I have a pipe running off my hood scoop and back towards the intake but I don't like that it's just "washing" air over the filter itself. What would y'all do on my setup to get colder air or harness the air from the scoop? I was thinking maybe mod a box where both lines run and seal in to it? Like an insulated box to keep heat out? Idk. Any ideas/help?

I really like the ALTA CAI on my car. It's open on the back, so air in the cowl area under the windshield wiper (near brake-master cyl.) freely flows.

I never thought of this till you mentioned the "washing over" effect. Well I think that's all we get. Having a good airflow around the filter just keeps the air from becoming stagnant and heated by the engine. Fresh air "washing" through that area is the best we can hope for. I do not believe we are going to ram any air into the engine by only changing the air filter.

I wasn't necessarily talking about changing the filter, more creating a way to allow the filter to feed off the #2 pipe in an insulated environment

Are you looking for this?

Copied from CravenSpeed website:

More Cold Air for Your Engine
One of the best ways to get some more power out of your R53 MINI's engine is to increase the volume of cold air available to it.

The Craven Speed Cold Air Intake allows massive amounts of cold air to get to our custom Unifilter lifelong foam filter. By sealing off air from the engine bay and opening the big filter to the cowl duct by the windshield, the engine has access to the cold air it needs to perform at it's best.
[.........]
Optional Expansion
As demonstrated here, the CravenSpeed Cold Air Intake can be modified easily to take advantage of the ram air inlet on R53 MINIs. See photo. This customer made their own Red hose to run from the ram inlet to the Craven CAI using PVC tubing and electrical tape.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. That, in my opinion would create some amazing air

Ya, I like that design too.

Previous owner put an alta on my car. It's open in the back like the craven. I like it, mostly because it "sounds" cool to hear the air rushing through.

If the car would have come to me with a stock set up, I may have just looked for a K&N to drop in to the factory set up, and call it a day. To me $300+ for a box and a hose is ridiculous. You can get a reduced sc pulley and the tool to change it for half that. Gotta figure another $40 for brk7equp NGK plugs, and $30 for a smaller belt,... But if it's unknown when belts and plugs were changed a new owner might do that anyway (using brk6equp for factory pulley)

Anywho, that is a MUCH bigger bang for the buck

I've had my mini for 1 year now, just put on a pulley last week. WOW, I wish I would have done that a long time ago!

Thanks for all the info. I still have my stock intake box, precious owner gave me the stock intake, so I may break out a dremel and try my hand at frankenstein-ing. I have the 17% sc pulley with belt and plugs on order as well as a boost gage. I'm excited for it, just helped my buddy put in his and it takes off like a little rocket.
