R50/53 Coolant Leaking at Temp Sensor
Coolant Leaking at Temp Sensor
2006 MCS. Anyone experience this point of coolant loss? Appears to be leaking from Coolant Temperature Sensor (first image below) and pooling in the tiny dip on the top of the transmission (second image) , and boiling off while driving. Also only appears to leak when engine is cool. Haynes manual doesn't mention an o-ring or gasket of any sort. Any known complications "behind" this leak? Any pro tips to fix? (Sensor is working properly) Or am I up for a straightforward swap of the part?

Here is the coolant temperature sensor. Look like this. I guess it could back out and leak, check to make sure its not loose. Also make sure the thermostat housing is not leaking or leaking on it.

Finally was able to catch it leaking actively today. Verified it is the thermostat leaking and running down onto the coolant temp sensor, as you suspected. Checking out the ECStuning site to go ahead and replace the thermostat, gasket, and housing while I'm at it. Looks like the Thermostat Replacement Kit is the way to go. Any deals I should know about before ordering?

Great, glad you pinpointed the problem. Also glad I could help.
We did last week have "Assembled by ECS" Kits on sale ( apart of our holiday sale ) for the thermostat housing, but that sale is over. No other offers I can think off. Never hurts to ask. Hope you get things fixed.
Thanks

Finally got around to replacing the thermostat and housing. Discovered in the process the source of the leak. One of the three housing bolt holes was stripped out. Had to tap a new 7mm hole in place of the existing 6mm stripped hole and was able to get the problem resolved.
