R50/53 Has anyone replaced a throw out bearing?
Has anyone replaced a throw out bearing?
I've been experiencing rougher than normal shifts during the last few months and about a week ago, my car randomly started shifting normally. However, it also developed an odd screeching sound when I depress the clutch pedal, usually only in the morning. I suspected it's the throw out bearing, but I can't find any instructions on how to replace it without also replacing the clutch. The clutch was replaced about 44k miles ago and still grabs well. Has anyone replaced just the throw out bearing?
I am not an expert here, but I am sure you have to pull the transmission in order to replace the throw out bearing. I think after going to all that time and expense, I would go ahead and replace the clutch.

+1. if you are going to change the TOB just replace the clutch as well, its a lot of work so you are better off changing as much as you can.
the job requires 95% of things to do as if you were changing the clutch the other 5% is unbolting the pressure plate to change the clutch.
I would advice that you change the tranny oil and have your shift cables checked, I don't know what kind of oil you have in it now but Redline will feels better than the BMW one. cheap too.
I had the noise too and my clutch was fine but the TOB was GONE 100% GONE lol, it seems that they don't last too long

Definitely consider doing the complete clutch pack. Here is the complete process drawn-out step-by-step and includes the throw-out bearing detail several paragraphs into the article:

Symptoms sound like throw out bearing.
Pulling the transmission is required ... I remember finding out the transmission needed to be pulled to get to throwing bearing on my first car ... A 1972 ford pinto. It was much easier to change out than my R50 mini! Always do clutch and pressure plate concurrently if you are doing that much work ... Even when you are a dirt poor student driving a pinto.

Yep....your right. I've thought about replacing my throw-out bearings since it makes a little noise sometimes...but I'm just going to wait until I need a new clutch and do it all at once. By the time you get down to the bearing...your'e already at the clutch also.
It would be crazy not to do a clutch while having the trans out. But when you do go with our Valeo flywheel conversion kit. That will replace everything clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, and throwout bearing.
