R50/53 LSD 1/05! Arghh..
So, I canceled my May build order in favor of waiting a bit for a July build, to get the '05 model. Now Mini has apparently announced that they will also phase in some additional changes in 01/05 -- including the option to get LSD, which I think would be pretty rad.
Can't bloody wait that long, though, so no scrapping this order. Hopefully it'll be dealer installable.

>>Parts: $2500
>>Labor: $1500

>>Total: $4000
Right now the Quaife LSD for MC or MCS is about $1100 for the part and maybe $90 more for the bearings, sealant, fluids, etc.
Then the labor is in the range of $900 to $1400 depending on who does the install. You can add a UUC lightweight flywheel for $499 more with no increase in labor costs. Racing clutch is also possible.
But this all voids the transmission warranty while the MINI LSD does not.
Not sure if it makes sense that it be dealer installable or if the factory should do it. I'd think it would be best done by the factory to keep costs down and be a less than $2000 option which would be worth the wait.
The MINI LSD is only for the MCS.

I would think that the LSD purchased at the time of ordering for a January 05 Mini would be less than $1000. A high quality Quaife runs that much and I doubt that there will be any costs for labor calculated into it. The SRT-4 included an LSD for their '04 as standard equipment and it didn't really raise the cost of the vehicle. My guess is $800 for the option. I am sure that Mini will purchase transmissions with the LSD already installed. The main cost for installation involves removing everything. The actual placement of the LSD into the gearbox takes no time at all, especially if it was done on an assembly line. So I am assuming it would cost a little less than the current MSRP for the unit.

This makes sense to me:

But I think the thing to do is do find out whether Getrag makes this six speed with an LSD for some specific application. I can't think of one, but I wonder, what other cars get this gearbox, and which get an LSD-equipped version? Alternatively, does anyone know for a fact that Getrag doesn't make such a gearbox, in which case we are probably looking at an expensive dealer installed option, which is going to rule out an LSD for a lot of us.
Anyone know?

>>Ford Focus also gets this tranny - not sure if it gets an LSD though....

>>Getrag Specs
Only the SVT gets this tranny and it comes with a Quaife, but it is unclear on whether SVT puts the quaife in the transmission or if it comes that way from Getrag.
I do believe that this is a factory installed option and not a dealer installed option. Although I am not aware of any manufacturer making this an option. They are either standard or that is it. In my opinion it should be standard. But like I said above with the transmission already out of the car, there is no way that there is a $1500 cost to put this into the transmission. My guess is that they will probably come already installed. If the unit is much more than $1000, I don't think many people are going to purchase it. Like I said above most manufacturers of high performance, handling front wheel drive cars include this as standard.

>>dgszweda1 - are you sure that the SVT Focus gets an LSD? I couldn't find anything on their site stating such for the current model. I know that you can get a Quaife via the aftermarket....
Dan,
You are right, my bad. $500 would be a great price if this holds true.

>>From what I gathered on Gabe's site, the LSD will be a $500 option. I am selling my car ans ordering a MCS w/LSD. There is another thread on this in the G Stock Forum.
>>Chris
Prices have been announced yet. I'd look for them in early June.
