I have looked at many Mini Pictures on the net and most of the cars have the white roof. Is this because of the "look" or because black absorbs heat? Just curious.

 

It's because of how they look and how well they go with a sun roof. In choosing your MINI and it's colors, you buy what looks good in your eyes. The black roof really looks good and accents many of the colors, like red, yellow, pepper white, electric blue, gold, dark silver and pure silver. The black roof also works fantastic with the sunroof. The sunroof just floats in the black roof.

Here's my friend's MINI, He did the stripes himself :

 

I've got a black roof. It all depends on the look you want. To me the white roof MINIs look friendlier, while the black roof MINIs look more aggressive.

 

The fewer there are, the more it makes the black roofs unique

As far as why so many white roofs?...its a traditional Mini paint scheme, theoretically from the racing days (...more visible from trackside). But although the white roof represents a "classic" look, it is also true that classic Minis did come with black roofs, too. Gray is a traditional roof color as well...and I have seen classic Minis looking very smart with an off-white body (...think PW) with a green roof.

I read on the MINIusa site that 70% of MINIs are ordered with contrasting roofs...I'd be interested to see the White/Black breakdown....

I seem to see WAY more DS/W than DS/B. Why, I dont know because DS/B is sharp, imho. DS/W just doesn't look as good (no offense to anyone).

I have a white roof (CR), and I like it. I made the choice because of its higher level of contrast and the "classic" standpoint. It is a friendlier look (verus more stealth or aggressive with the black). Also, I really liked the white wheels What I didn't like was the sunroof (which is 2/3 of the roof) being black while my actual roof was white. Which is why I have a white sunroof cover!

If I were to do it over again, I would get a black roof. They ARE more rare and when you see your color MINI with a black roof it looks like a totally different car- very intriguing. I would go IB/B all the way. There is no better looking combo imho!

I think I read that about 90+% of all MINIs sold in the US were specifically ordered so if you do not see as many with black roofs then they are not being ordered by the buying public.

In a hot climate like mine I can tell you that the white roof does help alot to reduce the heat in the MINI but many do opt for the black sunroof.

Further many owners like the look of the sunroof with black roof color because it will look all black instead of black on the glass and white around the edges.

It's all a matter of choice and what might look good to you.
In my opinion due to contrasts a light color body looks good with a dark color roof while a dark body looks good with a white roof.

It's good we do not have the choice of a dark silver or pure silver roof and mirrors. The MINI is one of the few cars you will see in production with a choice of black, white, or body color roofs.

 

Well I have both, CR/W and PW/B. Black roofs are nice but show dirt way too much compared to a white roof. Black roof goes great with PW (It enhances it) but generally speaking, black tops tone down the car too much, IMO.


You can say I am more biased to the white roof...oh and it is less hot inside than a car with black top.

 

It's weird - in NE Ohio, I have seen more black roof combos than white! I have seen PS/B, LY/B, PW/B, CR/B...I will be only the second IB/W (that I have seen). I'm sure I have not seen ALL the MINIs in Akron yet...

It's the same farther north here in the Cleveland area. There's a couple of Minis up in my apartment complex like this. I ordered CR/Blk and then I found the MCS at my complex with the black roof, and then one downtown with a black roof. I didn't feel so unique anymore. I still love it though, just can't wait to see it in person.

Black on Black, they call it the stealth mini.

 

I chose IB/B specifically because the contrast would be less than with a white roof. I like the subtle look.

 

I too have an IB/B....heard it was "rarer". Interesting stat, that 70% of MINIs have a contrasting roof...I would have thought it higher (not doubting you!), it's very rare I see mention of a roof that matches the body color (at least up on here or over at mini2).

Not sure ,as I have not seen one on the highway,but my white roof must stand out more
almost everthing on the road sits higher,sure could be an issue for speeders I guess,but
on my commute, I'm going for MPG, not tickets

I originally ordered my car in chili red/white. I went back in to my dealer with a month or so to spare (or so I thought) to change two things: ditch the auto A/C, and change the roof to black. The dealer's answer was "your car's already been built; it'll be here next week"! :smile:
