Crankshaft reluctor wheel

Has ANYbody seen the crankshaft reluctor wheel break apart? A large piece of my '03 S is missing and damaged the crank possition sensor in the destruction.
Wierd...... Just curious?

Are you referring to the crank pulley? There have been quite a few reports of this. Search crank damper pulley.

Not the pulley on the front. This is what the crankshaft possition sensor gets it's reading from. It is a toothed ring that is bolted to the crankshaft inside the engine. The sensor is a Hall effect sensor,(magnet?) and as the toothed ring goes past the sensor, it fluctuates the magnetic field allowing the ECU to know where the crankshaft is in the 360 degrees of rotation. There is a 2 tooth gap to give a larger spacing for timing reference for -0- degree reference. In a nut shell.........

Cool, never really knew the actual name of it, always just called it the Crank Position Sensor Ring, lol.
Anyway, I have to agree, unfortunately you're the first one I've heard of with a problem.

(Edited my post, sometimes I'm just not with it, thinking Crank Sensor, picturing Cam Sensor....don't as me why.... )

Crazy... I've spoken to a mechanic in Salt Lake City (my home), England and California. None have seen this before. The reluctor is towards the rear of the crankshaft and I'm the 2nd owner and the car came with a pretty complete service history. It now has 135k on the odometer.
The 3 mounting pads and bolts on the crank are still there as seen through the CPS opening, the reluctor however is broken apart.
So, I wonder what 'lil surprises I'll have once I've dismantled the engine..... Still have compression and oil psi..... So...... In to the depths I GO!!

Number 7 in the diagram. Correct.

Referred to as "impulse sending wheel" by MINI. "Reluctor" is another term looks like used by other manufacturers to describe it.

Had not heard of one failing like that.

Set to the right in the picture.

Good luck on install.

Reluctor

Mini/ BMW calls it a reluctor wheel also, see #7 from factory service manual( so I'm told this is a FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL). Nomenclature.....Eh.

end play?

Well, untill I can get the engine out and on an engine stand, I'm guessing that the crank end play is excessive and the reluctor wheel touched the block.............. Should know soon. I'll be looking for witness markes on EVERYTHING near there......
