R50/53 Detectors, jammers, scanners, etc.
What do you use and how well does it work for you?
I am planning on getting a Bel laser/radar jammer (lots of laser here), mount the LED
display warning thing under my rwo of toggle switch and the sensor infront of the car just below the
front number plate.

Everything that I've read indicates that you should save your money...and when you have enough, get a Valentine 1 radar/laser DETECTOR. Do a search (google, etc.) for articles from reputable testers (not the manufacturers), and you'll find that the radar jammers are universally deemed to be worthless (i.e., they don't work). The laser jammers are only somewhat more functional...and even then, they don't seem to work consistently.
Remember, if it sounds too good to be true...it probably isn't.

I have V-1 w/Blinder laser jammer. A great combo and luv it!
Here's a link on the topic of radar detector.
Radar detector test
After an extensive research, I found only Escort ZR-3 and Blinder laser jammer to be effective. As for radar jammer, I've yet to see one that's worth considering. Moreover, unlike laser, it's illegal to jam radar signals.

Yip, I am coming from the BMW forums (DTMPower.net, bimmerforums, etc. used to drive a e36 323i) all of them agree
the Valentine 1 is the best, and you get cool gadgets fro it, like the InvisiMirror etc. However, also heard alot before that
detectors don't reall work, when you get hit with a laser it basically only tells you, the cop got you(there is almost 0% radar here, just laser and camara's), the only time the detector saves you, is when the cop targeted a car next to you or infront of you and the laser scatters and your detector picks it up. Thought a jammer might be better seeing as it actually jams the freqency the laser beam operates on....then again, I might be wrong.
Anyone got howo's on how to hardwire a valentine 1 to a mini? Mmh...will hardwiring one violate my BMW motorplan?

They don't use radar here much, so it's not a big deal. I can get the Blinder on a good deal. Working well for you? Why use a Valentine aswell when you have the Blinder jammer? Or do you use the Valentine for radar detection?

Unlike radar signal, laser signal doesn't leak and hence, making the laser detector to be useless for advance warning. The best protection is to have a good radar detector like V-1 or Escort 8500 along with a laser jammer, which is legal in most states.

So far, so good!

Yes, V-1 for radar detection and Blinder for laser jamming.

It seems as if lots of people rave about the V-1. I bought a passport 7500s. It works well for me. After buying the detector I read all the posts about the V-1. I dont have any direct experience with it, but if I could go back in time... I would buy that one.
With my detector I did hardwire it and that makes for a clean install...

If we do a spirited drive in the PDX area you will need to lead the pack since you have all of the high tech hardware. The V1 will be my next purchase after the new wheels and tires and ECU next week. Love that bonus!

Don't mean to threadjack, but I have a story to relate and a request for help / info.
A week and a half ago, we went to test drive a MCS (again). On the way home, we were crusing in the left hand lane, following a pickup (we were commenting about the dog in the bed of the truck). Suddenly the laser detector goes off - I glance down and I'm going ~70 (+/- 1 mph) in a 55 zone. Sure enough, the cop pulls out behind us and hits the lights. When he comes up, he claims he clocked us going 81 mph - I just gawk at him and state "That's impossible!". Of course, he ignores me and we get the ticket.
So of course we're going to court, as my wife said (independently of any prompting from me) that she saw the speedometer when the dectector went off and also saw that we were going ~70. Given the following facts, does anyone thing we have a chance and do you have any recommendations or links that might help?
1) When the laser detector went off, we each independently looked at the speedometer to verify speed. We both are 100% certain it was within 1 mph of 70 mph.
2) The officer claimed he clocked the truck in front of us at 74 mph, and the ticket states this.
3) The truck in front of us was traveling at a higher rate of speed than us. No prove other than both of us agreed on this visual assessment.
4) The most common targets for LIDAR are front license plate (we don't have one) or vehicle headlights for their reflective ability. When the detector alerted us, the truck in front was approx. 50 yds away and the officer was 50+% obstructed from view. I don't see how he could target anything but our upper windshield from his viewpoint.
5) The ticket states the range at which we were clocked was just over 1400 ft. I'm curious what the effective ranges are for his LIDAR unit, and his accuracy at approx. 1/4 mi. range.
6) I know he could not have re-clocked us when we were in full view, as he was already in his vehicle by the time we approached his position.
Thoughts?
Doug
EDIT - I forgot to mention that we are going to visit our dealer (service is due soon anyhow) and have the verify and sign off that the speedometer is operating within manufacturers specifications.

Dan, you'll be very happy with V1. However, it's only good for radar detection and useless against a Laser device. A good laser jammer can complement V1 for full protection.
I'll be getting Unichip on the 24th also.

After reading the article, this unit appears to be very promising against laser devices. I would be interested to learn more about it from consumer's experience and feedback.
I personally haven't heard of Lidatek, but what do I know.

You do all realize you are nothing but a bunch of scofflaws givng the rest of us solid citizens calmly driving our MINI's at the posted speed a bad name don't you? I would rethink your wild ways and your schemes to thwart the law........
Detection: I use a V-1 (v1.8 and laser gen. 3). You can disable mode 4 - laser detection - if you like.
Countermeasures: I also have a Passport ZR3.
I feel that this is the best performing combo. The reviews I've seen tend to agree.
I posted pictures of my custom install some time ago.
