HELP! Maintenance Counter Reset

I just finished changing my oil for the first time thanks to the great DIY Sticky. Now I can't get the maintenance counter to reset. I follow the instructions in the sticky and it doesn't work. I press and hold the trip reset, insert the key and turn to first position. The display shows "1. tESt" and then "51A miles inspection -3200". Can anyone tell me how to get it to reset?

To reset the service interval indicator:

How to reset service light indicator Mini R53.
  1. Press and hold the trip button.
  2. Insert key and turn to position 1.
  3. Watch for RESET to appear.
  4. Release the button, then press and hold it again.
  5. Wait for the RESET to flash.
  6. Release the button, and then press and release (once only).
  7. Service interval should then be reset to next interval If that didnt work.

  4. .
  5. Release trip button.
  6. Wait 3 seconds.
  7. Push trip button.
  8. Wait (5, 8 seconds) for RST to appear in left corner.
  9. Release trip button.
  10. Push trip button.
  11. 15000 will appear as new service interval.
  12. 1Release trip button.
Or try this:
  1. Press and hold the trip odometer button.

  3. You will see 51A come up in the trip odometer area.
  4. Release, then press and hold again.
  5. Watch for the word RST to appear on the Odometer indicator.
  6. Release, then press and hold again.
  7. Wait for the RST message to fl ash.
  8. Release, and then press and release (once only).

Braminator, I got to the S1A (51a) but did not have instruction from there. Thanks for your help. I will try it out in about an hour.

Thanks Braminator! The second procedure you listed worked. It reset to 15500 and says oil service. But it isn't really a full 15500 miles is it? I thought I read in the owners manual something about the system taking into account the type of driving. I will keep an eye on it and see if it drops faster than the true mileage. Thanks again.

Yeah, it'll adjust to the way you drive. Lots of stop and go and short drives will shorten oil change interval. If you would drive just high way, it'll be longer. The computer adjusts based on the strain on the engine. If you bought good oil (amsoil, redline, MINI factory oil), you should be able to follow this recommendation. Just keep an eye on your oil level, at least once a month, and top up if needed. If you bought other oil every one recommends changing oil more often, about halfway through.

I was told BMW oil is Castrol. I used Castrol's best synthetic. I know my mini uses a little bit of oil every 3000 miles so I will definitely be keeping an eye on it.

Mine says right on the intercooler cover to use Castrol Oil. I use Mobil 1, as I have been in most of my cars for almost 20 years now. You need to check it every 500-1000 miles to make sure you never run low IMO.

What comes up for me when I first did this it said "test" than if I kept hitting the button it would cycle numbers , what was this ?

Edit : tried again an hour after I posted , gonna try again tomorrow before I drive to work if it doesn't work than i guess I'll wait till I change the oil as of now the speedo says "oil -19500" so It's apparently the reset has never been done in the last 20k
