R50/53 Painting the Brakes?
Hello again.
Noticed a company selling paint for the purpose of painting the brakes on a Mini. I think this would look pretty cool. Has anyone here done this? Pros/Cons?
And if I decided to do this once I get my MCS, what color would look good with BRG?
Thanks!

Do a search on painting brake calipers and you will find lots of threads on it. Check also at MINI2.com as there are a number of tutorials on this. It's not hard to do, depending on how thorough you want to be. Some people will disassemble everything including the rotor to do a complete paint job, but that's more work than just painting the visible surfaces and leaving everything intact--you just remove the wheel.

I recently purchased Hunter Green paint for my calipers and will be painting them when my rims come in. I noticed, as you probably did, you usually can't find green caliper paint (or it's lime green), and with the BRG cars (like mine), no other color would really look good.
Bought my paint (one spray can) for $3.98. Where? Home Depot. They have bar-b-que grill paint that is rated to 1200 degrees. I figure since the caliper paint is only rated to 900 degrees, it should be OK. Plus, it apparently dries in 2 hours (not 24 like the caliper paint).
Again, I haven't painted them yet, so it may be a disaster.....

I was all set to do the spray can deal rite up until i pressed the button.I had the wheel masked off and was all set and at the last second decided to hold off and get the actual caliper paint. My reasoning was that in the long run the actual painting would be a lot faster as there was virtually no masking needed as you brush it on. Second the paint is designed for this application and takes into consideration all factors such as wheel cleaners hot and cold expansion and road wear. The bar b cue paint only really addresses the heat issue. I admit it is much cheaper and I was seconds away from doing it tha way myself but when you think of the saved money in labnor alone the less than $40 G2 paint kit is a bargin . I got my kit thru Moss Mini and after 20k miles still looks good. Randy

Good point. I guess I'll have to re-think it (although, I still have the problem that it only comes in lime green...)
And, could you resize your photos?

Second, the red looks great. I have DS/B so I think the best color would be the red. I guess you would just take off the wheel and paint it eh? I wouldnt want to get paint all over the car though... HMMMM.... maybe this needs some more thought!!!

I use heat-resistant paint designed for the engine. Even though it's a spray paint, I painted the calipers with a brush. How? I first spray some paint into a container, then use the brush. No tape needed.

Yeah, you should definitely paint your brakes. Those silvery disks look so... stock, so original equipment. Get yourself some Rustoleum spraypaint and color those nasty bare metal disks. Definitely.

>>After all, Porsche painted the rotors black on their new Carrera GT. So did Ferrari on the Enzo.

I bought the brush on paint kit from a company in Pennsiylvania (Eastwood.com), they have several colors. I am pretty pleased with the results. Mine are red. The paint is proper aircraft paint that comes in two parts, you mix them and you have to get it done in less than six hours as at that point you can't use it anymore it becomes so hard. If you do get that kit, ($40) be aware that you'll have about half of it left over after four coats to the MINI calipers so think in terms of painting another car's or perhaps the top hats and the rotor slots....otherwise its bye bye twnty bucks.....like happened to moi......I am getting ready to order plack paint for my Audi Allroad and I will do my A4 with that.....those will be black......
