By stall...do you mean actually dies, as in you have to re-start the car? Under what circumstances does this happen?

It can't have nothing wrong with it if it stalls. Is it only when cold? Is it just that the MINI techs can't make it do it when you bring it in?

More info please.

My dad's old Volvo used to stall at idle all the time when it was cold. Automatics can still stall. Does this happen when its cold? Thats usually the most comon circumstance I can think of under which an automatic will stall, unless there's something wrong with it. You're not putting it in neutral, revving it, and then throwing it into drive are you?

Yes, stalling is a known problem with the MC CVT. Make a log of when and where it stalls and report it to your dealership service advisor.

>>the guys at mini say there is nothing wrong with it

While it is not super common, it does happen and if the stalling occurs in the middle of traffic it can be dangerous.
If your CVT stalls with regularity you must report it.

Don't be so down, it can be fixed. Ask them to upgrade your ECU software to V36 if it doesn't already have this version. It might help....I would think it would be a good place to start. Then don't accept, "there is nothing wrong," from the dealer. Obviously a car that stalls is a safety hazard you shouldn't have to deal with. If necessary tell them to keep the car and drive it until it stalls.....get a loaner car from the dealer.... Call MINIUSA and discuss it with them. That might not help, but do it anyway to have the problem documented. Sometimes Phil Kayler of MINIUSA can be helpful. his phone number is 201-573-7856.

My MINI is a 5-speed but from what I read the CVT is an excellent choice....just gotta get the problem fixed.

Good luck,

R.E.

I seem to recall that the CVT in MINIs actually have a computer controlled clutch. (If I am wrong, please correct me) Most automatics have a torque converter, which almost never causes the car to stall. Since your car has a clutch, it would behave just like a manual - it would stall if the clutch is not released/engaged correctly.

So basically your car stalls because, well, the computer is not perfect at controlling the clutch.

wow that really DOES make sense. thats cooler then a torque converter, if the computer can learn to use it.

good luck

actually you have what some people call teh yo-yo or the lurch... there is somehtign wrogn with the car.. mine used to stall on the way to work eswpecially when sitting in traffic, where the rpms were low... make sure you take it to the dealer and tell them you want the newest computer software reinstalled! it can be installed improperly. mine was once.. I'm not sure what the newest version is btu it vastly improves the driving of the cvts... also rember that you have three modes of driving D, SD, and auto-stick plus you have the "over teh topp) on the pedal, which if you press all teh way to ressitence and then a little farther down you get teh car to rev really high.. this somtimes feels or can cause a feelgin of a stall if you are do it over and over again. good luck and ceck with the <------ dealer rating system of the left to see if you dealer is in there and how they rate if they coem out lokoign liek total ****** i'd spedn the tiem adn go to another reputable dealer
