New Competition Clutch, suonds like diesel.

Just completed the long job of removing and placing my stock r53 clutch with a Competition Clutch stage two. I replaced All the oils, seals, bushings, and greased everything. I put on a new DDM cold air intake as a final cap of the project. Took me about 6-7 weeks to complete. I was warned that the Lighter flywheels tend to rattle. This one sounds like a diesel engine at idle. Sometimes at low speeds too. Is this expected? Is something wrong? I am really worried cause i just spent alot of my "tips" income on this.

some lightweight flywheels chatter, some chatter a shitload. I had a Spec stage 1 and Fidanza flywheel on my last mini which barely chattered. I also had a CM flywheel and CM stage 1 clutch on my jetta which chattered so bad i could barely hear the attendant in drive-thrus. Is your clutch disc a sprung-hub or solid-hub? that usually makes a pretty noticeable difference, especially when a solid-hub is mated to a single-mass flywheel.

I never noticed any damage and I ran the Jetta for 10K trouble-free miles. I believe it's still running around here just fine. The MINI was still in great shape when I sold it and it's still going strong as well. You're just going to have to live with clutch chatter.

I think i have other issues. i dont think this is flywheel chatter.

It only makes the noise while the clutch is engaged. If petal is pressed its very quiet. I think its the transmission making this chatter. Something it did not do before the new clutch.

That is exactly the way my Jetta was when I had it.

Normal for all the ones I have heard.....

If it's really bothersome for ya, the ones offered by OS Giken are probably quieter than most.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but does this sound like a throwout bearing issue? My buddy's '88 M3 made this exact sound and it was the bearing.

Please enlighten...

the thing that helped my car with chatter was just letting it break-in (took several thousand miles to get slightly quieter) and getting stiffer motor mounts. I would specifically recommend the lower motor mount to start with.

iv been wondering about this for awhile now ever since i put my spec clutch and flywheel in iv had the same chatter. at first i thought i didnt torque the clutch bolts down enough and then everyone started telling me its the flywheel but im not so sure anymore. i notice now that when the car is in neutral and my foot is off the clutch i can hear the chatter but ,let me see if i can explain this, if i "pretend" to put the car in gear with my foot still off the clutch i can just barley start to push the shift **** into 1st without ever completely going into gear the chatter goes away. this is making me think its something in the gearbox and nothing to do with the clutch assembly. any thoughts?
also iv had almost 15k miles of break in and pretty stiff engine mounts and its just as loud as the day i installed it.

I have a 2006 JCW with stage 2 competition cluctch too. Chatters when engine running and clutch pedal not pushed in. Also sounds like a mini diesel when taking off. Completely normal

I actually too have this "chatter" on a stock R53S(facelift), but like stated above if I engage / push the clutch petal in, the noise disappears. Is this something that has to do with the "throw out bearing"? One of my older mechanic buddies mentioned that it could be the bearing, but he really never sounded to sure of that answer. Plus we were just at Sheetz bull-sh1ting, and I just showed him (well...... let him hear the sound) real quick....

IT does sound like it coming out of the gear box, i agree. its like the gears are churning. the throwout bearing makes more of the whine/whistle(my old one did) then a churn as this makes.

also im thinking putting on the cold air intact is letting more noises into the cockpit that i never noticed before. might be part of it.

This is normal. I changed the throw out bearing first and then the put h and flywheel earlier this summer. I have the stage four and it chatters as well when the clutch is released and not in gear. You will have to get used to it.
