If you want one new.....you would be out of luck. You could potentially find a used one for that much though.

I know this sounds odd....but I suggest checking ebay. Couldn't hurt.

Heh.... the sad part is you're right.

Unless you either find:

1) an uninformed seller
2) a wrecked or otherwise salvaged car

You're looking at $18-20k minimum. It seems even the stripped down 02's still go for at least the base '04 retail price ($17,000).

I was looking for a used MINI at first; Once I realized how little I would save (and how much I would gain by getting the full warranty, etc.) it was a no-brainer to spend the extra cash on an '04 (paid just at $23,000 for mine including tax + dealer fees, the '02s I was finding with similar specs were around $20k even with 20,000-ish miles burned out of the warranty).

EDIT: Just to make it clear, and so you don't get your hopes up, I seriously (SERIOUSLY) doubt you'll find anything for under $15k that hasn't had an accident/repairs done. That being said I second L.Mini's suggestion of e-bay.... who knows, you may have to travel quite a bit from TX to find the deal you're looking for, but I guess it's close enough to the actual price that if you find a desperate seller at the right time (through ebay or whatever) you might be able to swing it (I stress MIGHT).

I found my '03 MCS through AutoTrader.com. I didn't really save any money vs. buying new, and ended up getting more options than I had planned, but I got the model and color combo I wanted in the time I had available (I couldn't afford to wait for months...).

I'm very happy with the way things went and would recommend at least taking a look to see what's out there. Just be sure to fully inspect the car - or have atrusted mechanic do it - before you do any deal.

Good Luck!

JK

I would suggest calling every dealership you can find, further away from cities the better. There is one in my town that they have had for a few months and people aren't even looking at it, I'm sure they'd deal down.

Base model 2004 Coopers should be selling (used) for about $15,000 by the time this dude has his driver's license.

(from other posts, etc., he's not kidding about his age)

The chances of finding a MINI at a dealership and having them "deal down" are really far fetched. I have never heard of this car being sold at a discounted rate.

OK...if you don't mind my asking...why do you need this many cars? You aren't even old enough to drive.

Son....that's a 5 day auction. The auction was started at $9K. There haven't even been any bids yet.
Look at that again on the 28th right before it closes.

For what it's worth, my neighbor has his own used car lot.

He told me last summer that Cooper S's were already going for around $10,000 at wholesale. I never went to an auction with him to find out, but that's what he said.

And, since we're on the subject, did anybody see that red MCS on Ebay a few months ago that had been stolen from a parking lot? When the cops found it, it was all beaten to you know where. No glass. The interior was trashed. It almost moved me to tears :???:

You never did answer my question though. Why do you need three cars? You can't legally drive for more than a year.

^ Well, you're right about that... AND it has Nav (so it's not a base-optioned stripper). Hey, if you've got 9 grand, jump on it. Then if you get sick of waiting 2 years to drive it, you can always sell it for much more than what you paid!

(but seriously, I suspect that the seller will try to back out of the auction one he realizes his mistake...OR there's something seriously wrong with that MINI that doesn't show in the pics/description)

BTW, when I was 14, I neither had $9,000, two other cars, nor the interest in having a garage full of cars that I couldn't legally drive. Sheesh.
