Are you sure it's not the boot latch that's rattling? Cause that's a known problem and the fix is simple: replace the boot latch.

I heard somewhere that it could be the ball ends on the cords that lift the boot cover with to boot.

It probably is the latch. But you can check for the "rattling *****" problem by simply removing the divider panel (the ***** travel with it) and seeing if you still have the rattle.

The latch was redesigned about part way through the 2003 year. The new part will fix you right up (under warranty).

OK, I have a 04 MCS and have a rattle back there. Also How is the cardboard boot cover supposed to sit on the rubber nubs that are attached to the hatch door? On top or are the nubs supposed to press the cover back against the back seat?

My 03 MC has a nasty rattle---very noticeable over sharp bumps in the road. I used to think it was the storage shelf lid, until I removed it from the car and noticed it was still there.

Guess I need to get my latch replaced.

my '04 MC had this rattle at only 120 miles... turned out it was just a dry latch... there was no grease in the boot latch.

Put about a 1.5 inch length of electrical tape around the boot striker where the latch grabs it. That fixed mine.

A couple wraps of electrical tape solved my boot rattle too. . . .

Take it for a Warranty repair, the striker has been redesigned. The older one was chrome, the newer one is black (part #51-24-7-154-735) and has a larger radius.

The lock has also been redesigned; mine was intermittent and was thought to contribute to the hatch rattle (part # 51-24-4-330-498)

They have also installed 2 additional rubber ***** in the hatch area. The 02's, don't know about the 03's, had only 2 rubber bumpers. The 04's have 2 more mounted where the rear bumper cover (upper edge) is secured to the body. They are located in the lower left and right of the rear hatch opening. They are not adjustable like the upper ones.

Now as for your ***** swinging while you drive, well that's another problem, but please don't resort to removing them

In my MCS the rattle is all the tools I carry back there because it's a British car.
