10,658mi oil analysis (32 months)

First UOA report for my '06 MCSc... 40,658mi on the motor, 10,658mi on the oil, 32 months.

As my 2nd car, the Mini hibernates a lot. I wanted to know how the Additive Package would hold up at the 2-yr mark, which I went beyond to 32 months. All wear metals are below Universal Average (adjusted for 87% more miles). TBN is still high enough for a few more thousand miles.

Edit: motor is stock.

The report say Mobile 1 5w/30 for the oil.

I don't know why people don't think that the oil can't handle the extended runs if it is designed to do so. Always amazes me....

In some cases it can....but..
did you just see mini changed the factory oil changes to 10,000?! On motoringfile and on a thread here....
it is for gen2 motors, which seem to be harder on the oils with the turbo and timing chain issues...but definately a tale of caution to use testing when going to higher mile limits imo.

If you read the article it doesn't state what models are affected by this change. One user even points out that it is likely a R57 or R59 because of what is listed. Does that mean that all models are affected? Likely not... I have been doing my changes at the recommended intervals and have not had a single problem.

I do think that the turbo intervals are too long though. Lots of complaints there. I would likely do it at 10K instead of the recommended.

Good Info! Thanks

I have been changing my oil when the count down meter on my R53 says too. It usually happens in about 10,000 miles because my car goes to the track about once a month. (The meter really counts gas consumed I believe). So that works out to about 29 track days between oil changes.

Car just turned 96K miles. All original internals & head.

Yikes....I cringe at the thought....

But hey, it's your car

Changing your oil often is cheap insurance, especially when the car is driven hard. Having seen these motors apart...the ones that have the oil changed often and that are properly warmed up before driven hard are always in vastly better shape.

we got a comedian here folks....

Seriously, follow the OBD countdown...I could care less how people maintain their car. I was merely pointing out that someone who does 30 track days between oil changes, might want consider a different interval...

I think most people don't have their oil analyzed, so old habits die hard. I've only been doing this occasionally since I began using synthetic... first in my VW 1.8T engine and now in my Mini. Besides the metal wear data, you also get an idea on filtration and any leak between oil and coolant.

A quality synthetic will last a long time. I run Amsoil which is arguably the best available. Once a year oil change is enough for me. 10-12,000 miles.

I never run any filter but the factory filter on any vehicle I own. 'Too many variables otherwise.

When changing oil, don't forget about your transmission lube/fluid. I've got a 6 speed manual with limited slip and though the car's only got 51,000 miles on it, the transmission lube has been changed twice. The first time with the factory recommended stuff (which is full synthetic) and the second with Redline MTL.

Automatics can benefit from more frequent fluid changes, MOST especially the CVT's which are very hard on the fluid.

martin - the Getrag 6sp can make a groaning sound in slow turns left or right. OEM fluid was updated to Texaco MTF 94, which solved the problem. Does your manual trans make any groaning sound with Redline MTL?
