Not your normal "Speedo is off" question

I searched, but most the other speedo issues posted seem to be a constant linear mph off reading.

We just purchased a '06 JCW w/ chrono package last month. The other day, I was driving away from a stop light and entered a 35mph zone. I usually accelerate to what I feel is 35mph-ish and then check the speedo. It said I was doing 50, and cars were still passing me. It most definetly wasn't 50mph. At the next stop sign, completely stopped, the speedo went down to about 11-12mph. Turned the car off, still 11mph.

At our destination, I turned the car off and waited a minute, speedo still said 11mph. When we got back 15 minutes later, it had dropped back to 0mph and was fine the rest of the way home.

I know I've said another time or two, wow, it doesn't feel like we're doing 60, but can't say for certain if the same issue was affecting the readout then. Just assumed it was because we're used to driving the truck or T/A.

Anyone else ever have this issue?

I've never had this issue with the speedo, but I did with my gas gauge. A quick ECU reset did it for me

Good luck!

Never saw this with my 2006 JCW W/Chrono package.

Maybe you have a bad wheel speed sensor?

Well, I reset the ECU the other week (thanks for the idea), and at least twice since then the speedo has read +11mph when driving and stopped.

The odometer stays constant when stopped, which to me rules out a wheel sensor.

Hesitant to just drop it off at the dealer in that I have a feeling we'll get it back saying "could not replicate problem" since it's random. The current plan is if it does it when we're somewhat close to the dealership, if we have the time and if they're open, we will stop in.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
- Gary

Have you called the dealer and asked them? It might be something they've seen before.

You could verify your speed by using a GPS in the car - at least then you'd know where you're at.

The needle hanging up thing is weird tho....especially as it's always at 11 mph.

If you could borrow a scan guage for a perod of time then you could see if the issue was in the system or just in the speedo head.

A mini update...

We called the dealer and they said they had heard of a similar issue and to bring it in (even if the speedo was correct at the time). We decided to wait and see if we could catch it when it was off, just so there would be no "could not duplicate" issues.

One morning two weeks ago, it happened again, this time a constant 14mph over. That evening starting up to go home, it was 31mph when I first started it! Decided to head straight to the dealer, doing over 100mph on the way there

The particular service writer hadn't see it before, so I told him to take a look and if he could take a picture as proof for the extended warranty people. Two weeks later, finally got it back (they had delays getting the chrono cluster) with a new guage cluster installed. Hope that fixes it!
