I don't know if this has been mentioned here before, but this is something I just found out. I noticed this last week but didn't know what it was. As I was leaving my driveway, to go to work in the morning, the MINI chimed once and then nothing. No warning light in the center cluster nothing(that I noticed). I scratched my head and thought that was odd, and then figured I'd just check the boards when I got into work to see if anyone else had noticed this.

After browsing around I found a post on MINI2 about the MINIs black ice warning system! As the outside temp nears zero a chime will sound and the outside temp will flash on the tach,to warn you about a potential black ice condition!

Since then it has been pretty warm at night and I haven't been able to comfirm if that "black ice" warning is what happened, but this moring there was frost on the pumpkin! In my garage it was 4C, as I pulled out and the temp dropped to 3C the chime sounded and the outside temp flashed as the temp continued to fall to -.5C. So there you go, yet another cool(no pun intended) feature of the MINI!

That reminds me though, I must drain the garden hoses!.
Winter, shes a coming!

Wow thanks for the info, and research. I noticed our cooper doing this a couple og times lately. 1 chime then the temp flashes on the tack for a few. I was going to post a question about it this morning

That's awesome, especially since it was below freezing in CT last night and this morning, still pretty cold actually! Coop is going to need to be kept warm when he arrives this week!

If only I had heard a chime in my first Mini, I still might have it now. Ah well, never mind. At least I know they are strong and can withstand a heavy crash.

It's sorta like when you turn your ac to far down in your house and the tiles on the bathroom floor get so cold that the water that splashes out of the shower freezes and causes you to slip and slid everywhere. Now just picture that everywhere, with a zillion sno cones spread all over the place, and the sun never comes up until 9 in the morning and it goes down at 4 at night, and it feels like it will never end, until your skin goes so white you look like an albino, and you go mad and you pick up and go to Florida for one week and wear shorts and t-shirts in 60 degree weather...

I live for summer!

Last time that I was in Lake Placid. I woke up, went to my car. 6 Cans of "Jolt" Cola had exploded due to the cold. I reached in the back seat and got them. Went to get out of my car, and the inside door handle snapped off due to the cold. That place is brutal!

My MINI chimed this morning, with Temp flashing 37F. Glad to know about this.
I thought for a minute we were going to have some major MINI malfunction.

Hey 2minis - I used to live in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake too! I was there from like '86-'90. I definately remember the cold! I owned a diesle for a while and it really was tough in the winter. I parked it one time and it wouldn't start for over a week - there was no place to plug in the block heater.

I lived on the top of this hill and sometimes it was so icy that I couldn't drive up the hill. One night I got about half way up, but could make it to the top, so I parked it for the night. The next morning, I found my car had slid backward all the way down to the bottom of the hill

My BMW 325iX did this as well. It's quite a handy feature.

When I was a kid, my family used to go up to Schrune (?) Lake, which is up near Placid. I remember the lake water was always ice cold even in July or August. My father went up there to ski sometimes, and he told me once he had to put hot coals under the engine to get it to start. Brrrrr. I'd have stayed in bed.

Schroon Lake. I know it well. Pronounced screwin. It's funny. Down here I'm reluctant to get in the water if it is below 76F when up there when it was 68F I miss my Wenonah!!!!

Hey, wait a minute!

My wife just told me that her 2001 Nissan Pathfinder does the same "black ice" warning. Apparently the Pathfinder chimes and flashes "ice ice ice" in the compass/temp. guage.

So - what's with that? I don't mind that a BMW or other "fancy" car does the same, but a stinkin' Pathfinder?

Thanks for the info. Just happened last week and the dealer wasn't sure.
When I called today to tell them of your posting I was told it's a cold weather
reminder.

I guess it's about time to put the fun away soon.
Snows coming.
Heated garage!!!!! Racing parts!!!!!

Maybe winter won't be so bad!!!!!

I thought it was just telling me it had reached a stable temperature because the temp in the garage was low 60 degrees and the outside temp was mid thirtys. Didn't realize that it was a warning for possible ice conditions..COOL

April? You're lucky. In Cleveland we can still get frost well into May.
