So that’s what that chime sound is.
Was just going to ask everyone what that was, we have been having freezing weather and the last couple of times I started out with the car and I heard the chime. It was baffling to me and I was wondering why the temp gauge was blinking – good to know.

Mine went off for the first time last week. It chimed, and the OBC display flashed "36 degrees". Of course, I was nice and toasty warm in my heated leather seat!

There's a song by The Postal Service that features an electronic chime that I swear is exactly like the MINI outside temp chime..........freaks me out whenever I hear that song! Makes me instictively check my outside temp reading, too........before I have a good laugh at myself!

I also started my MINI up the other morning (a cold one) and my CD player was apparently parked at a weird spot between tracks, because after a second or two, the chimes from the intro of McCartney's/Wings "Let 'Em In" sounded and that freaked me out, too. I thought it was the outside temp chime at first....'til it kept going. Very apppropriate...very British.

Gosh, I kill me!!!

We heard the chime both Friday (37) and Saturday (35) mornings. The official temp on Saturday was 33 The previous low records was 37.

On Saturday morning we went to La Jolla and swam at 7AM - in the ocean. Air temp was up to the low 40's. After the swim the heated seats felt great.

Anyone know of a way to disable the chime? It was charming the first couple times, but now it's annoying. I know how cold it is when I walk out the door.

I also know what the temp it is when I walk out the door.....but the important advantage of this feature is that at any time later while you're driving, say late at night, once the temp drops to 37, it chimes to let you know to be aware....a pretty cool feature, which by the way, is mentioned in the owner's manual

Thanks for the info, Wainair! You saved me a "trip" to the owner's manual!

My MINI chimed a few times in the past week ... no warning lights, and everything else seemed to be working. It was especially puzzling since it didn't chime right when I start up the car (probably because it's usually garaged). I'll watch for the blinking temp display next time.

Greetings from Sunny Sacramento,

Just some extra information about why 37 degrees and not 32 degrees is when it chimes. The process of ice changing from a solid to a liquid or vice versa is affected by something called 'latent heat'. This is a type of energy that is required during the transition to a liquid and released when ice forms. If you were to take a pan of ice and water and heat it up on a stove, the temperature will rise to 37 degrees then stay there untill all of the ice has melted before the temperature will rise any more.

OK, now I've bored everyone to sleep. Sorry.

Cool find.

I did not find this in my manual. I noticed 37* flashing. Unlike Canada, I hear it several times a day during this parched winter we are having.

Does anyone know if it can be turned off? It drives me nuts. I keep looking at the gas gauge!
