that's exactly what it is, the exhaust system contracting after its thermal expansion.

my MCS makes that noise even while the car is running.

not to worry. that noise will diminish as the exhaust metals
relax a bit after breakening them in...may take 10k miles
or so. happens on a lot of new cars.

I was told it's just the heat shields contracing while they cool down

I got it too, driving and after shutoff. I also thought it was the heat shields and I really didnt notice it until after I installed the short shifter (you have to move the heat shields to do it) so I thought maybe a readjust was in order. when the milltek arrives I figured I'd give it another go.

If it is the exhaust how many miles do you need? I've got 4100?

Yes, it's the mis-alignment of the heat shields, not the exhaust pipes themselves.

My MCS makes the noise while driving, too.
It's very common that the system makes noise after shutoff,
but I don't think it's usual while driving...
Mine has a little bit over 9K miles, but still it makes knocking noise.
It's just a knocking noise, but not comfortable noise.

No, you are not alone here.
And also I appreciate your posting because now I know I'm not alone.
I'll follow up the symptom with my MCS and make any report if available in the future.

Happy motoring!
