Its one of the unique qualities of the Mini...but it won't kill the car.

I think the resale and the collectability of our center mounted speedo MINI's just went up!

I'm with KerMini. All of us that have the center speedo now have the coolest cars....

I thought that the "gauge pack" was an option? The center-speedo will still be standard, as far as I know (whew!)

according to the head mini person at my dealership, that new gauge pod will be an option, just like the nav. I would be really surprised if they moved it permanently away from the middle- just too much heritage would be lost..

of course, he could have been BS'ing me since he knows I am interested in the cabrio.

Yes, the "gauge pack" is an option. Gabe's article clearly states that the Speedo is still standard and not going to disappear.

Here is the new 2005 dash-

I like the new "gauge pack". But I still prefer the Center Speedo. Mini is known to have the speedo in the center. I wish they have small Guage pack as an option that can be place next to the current RPM.

They can't remove the center speedometer. Like my friend said, "Wow, the cop can just look in and see how fast you are going and won't need to pace you."

I'm glad they're not getting rid of the center mount speedometer. After all, that's one of MINI's trade mark. Those chronograph gauge cluster does look pretty neat.

Here is a quote from Bridger website:

"The interior in both cars will see some tweaking in several areas. First off the dash moves from a 5 piece unit to a three piece one. Secondly there will be a gauge package offered that moves to the location of the current speedo (the speedo moves next to the tach). This will only be an option and doesn't signal any sort of permenant move for the speedometer"

Hope this helps

Motor on!

To paraphrase Charlton Heston....

You'll take my center speedo when you pry it from my cold dead fingers.

One of my friends said the same thing.
It would take just as long to get used to a normal speedo again as it did to get used to the center mounted one. It's always weird driving another car , I find myself looking over to my right to see how fast I am going.

Heck, I've learned to judge speed by tachometer and gear. The Speedo's not that accurate anyway. I've never gotten all that trained to look right.

Glad to see that was cleared up quickly

You can find out much more about the 2005 interior here: http://www.bridger.us/mini/?Y=2004&M...iorTrimInDepth

"The Cockpit Chrono Package also available as an option emphasizes the sporting and elegant ambience within the MINI Convertible: In this case the central instrument features two circular dials presenting the level of fuel in the tank, oil and coolant temperature, as well as oil pressure. The speedometer is moved next to the rev counter on the steering column, the particular feeling of sports motoring being further accentuated in this case by the optional three-spoke leather sports steering wheel.

Though I like the look of the center speedo alot, I wouldn't complain about having the speedo located at a greater distance from my wife. Speed makes her nervous

Having the RPM and speedom behind the steering wheel is not a good idea first off. Shorter drivers (or those that like to sit up close) tend to see only half the readouts. The new center pod is cluttered at best. I like the way my 04 Mini (not S) looks just fine. It it ain't broke, why fix it? Instead, how about getting us some more storage room? Yeah baby!
