check engin light after new spark plugs

Day 2 of owning a 2003 cooper s. One day one i found out i needed a new suercharger. Today i put in new bosch plat4s ,got gas and the check engin light came on. I think i want my tired old miata back.

Could the plugs or gas cause the light to come on? I did use no name 93 octane.

Pull the code and post it up. That will give us a hint on what is happening.

Welcome aboard. Scan it for codes and that will give you an idea. Your light is also related to your supercharger issue. good luck keep us posted.

The FGR7DQP is the platinum 4 and it ok to run in that engine. There is nothing wrong with that plug for a stock car. By saying "correct ones" you are implying that they are wrong for the car and that is not the case. If you don't like them because they are Bosch then simply say so.

ok, I dont like them. but thats not going to change your mind right?

I find the quality of them to be poor compared to the OEM NGK items.

Welcome!!
The plugs on an s need to be tourqued down propperly, or the mini has a tendancy to "spit" them out...not related to the light, but something to watch for.
why the new SC? Low boost or rattling /chain dragging sound? If the sc is truely bad, the light may be the result of that....but tuff to guess withouth a code...maybe the sc is fine...many a good part has been replaced due to folks self diagnosing stuff online....folks have swapped a sc, just to find noise from a bad tensioner or lights/overheating from a crank pulley that is seperating. The lerning curve on a mini is steep, but so is the reward imo.

Change my mind about what? Why do you assume and imply that I have a preference on anything? All I said is to not mislead people by saying that they are not correct when, in fact, they are. Fact is, Bosch makes a pretty nice plug for a daily driver but if you must know my preference, they are NGK Iridiums and that is what I currently run (one step colder).

Let's not lead that OP down a rabbit hole. The plugs should be ok if they are new. Get the codes first and then we can diagnose.

Make sure the gas cap is tightened all the way. I had this same problem, and even brought it in to the dealership. They were ready to take the heads off and clean the carbon deposit. Then, someone told me to tighten the gas cap. Problem solved!!

Well said. And all true. I have a grumpy disposition about the particular plug due to one failing by the electrode basically falling out and causing engine damage. However it can happen with any plug I am sure.

OP, what codes did you come up with? Are all the plug wires pushed in well?

Wow! Lots of posts to my question. Thanks. SC makes loud chatter and based on my extensive internet research and confirmed by a neighbor who works with superchargers, its going bad but not shot yet. I did tighten gas cap and checked plug wires. The wires are full of what seems like Vaseline on each end. Is that normal? I will get the codes checked. I'm going to take it to a shop for a good once over to let me know what else I might need to deal with. The brakes also squeak a bit.

Thanks for the replies...such hostility over a check engine light thread ;>)
I'll try and get someone to check the codes this week. I did make sure the plug wires were attached good but they have some kind of Vaseline on both ends. I wiped some off. Is this some kind of factory anti seize goo? What is the torque spec for the plugs? The plug box said 21 ft lbs.

Thge goo on the plug wires is dielectric grease...
good to use on the plug wire connections at the coil ends....improves the connection, keeps moisture out, prevents corrosion...usually not suggested on the plug end.

Yeah, and it shouldn't be clumped on, a thin coat is all that is needed.

I did get a new gas cap. The rubber gasket on mine was all cracked. That seemed to help. I didn't do anything else and the problem went away so it must have been the cap.
