R50/53 cooper transmission noise
Mine has made a gear-type whining noise in reverse since she was new (have over 14K miles on her) - I believe it's normal as numerous other British gearboxes have acted this way for me in the past but if you have a concern, check with the dealer.
I just had mt 5spd replaced with a remanufactured unit after seal failure (see "unser the bonnet": Cold weather xmission replaced" thread) and yes the gearbox is terribly noisey in reverse as was the first one. My conclusion is that it must be normal.
Hi!
We have some weird noise to with our MC 5 speed manual transmission and here in Quebec, the winter has been pretty cold! We found some oil in the snow. we check the engine oil and there it was full. Maybe we have the same problem that you have(transmission seal). Is the work and the part were covered by the warranty? What is the millage in you MC?
Thanks,
Martin

Marines007, welcome to NAM!
Maybe you don't know about the "Search" function on the site...so I'll point you to THIS THREAD on 5-speed Cooper transmission replacments. It sounds like you may have exactly the same problem that several others have reported. In which case, you're due for a transmission replacement UNDER WARRANTY. From what I can tell, I'd be surprised if Canadian MINI dealers haven't seen quite a few of these... Good luck, and let us know how it turns out. But get to the dealer soon!

Cooper trannys may be a little noisy in R, but I've had several small cars that have been the same so it seems perfectly normal to me. IMO, its not a problem. Good question though especially w/ some isolated (I hope) problems popping up. Otherwise, I love feel of the 5-speed!!!!
thanks for all the input, i just picked the car up yesterday , so it's only got 100 miles on it, traded in an S for it, so was just sort of comparing noise's, going back to the dealer today to get the automatic door lock when you drive off function turned off so will ask them about the tranny

rcall, if you could describe the noise a bit more, we might have a better idea of what you may be dealing with. I had my Cooper's 5-speed transmission replaced under warranty after the seal failed, and I definitely noticed the telltale noise of grinding bearings in numerous gears, not just reverse.
just got back from the dealer where a friend works in the service department and he said the whine that i am hearing when backing up is common to all the 5 speeds,, it sounds just like the transmission in my grandpas old truck,, i think it comes from straight cut gears,, if you back up realy fast it almost sounds like the old fire engine siren,, i guess the new cooper looks a little like the old one and sounds a little like the old one,,, but still a great car
chrisnl, yeah going forward I have a noise for ya...see what you think.
Okay if I'm in first...everythings fine, but when I hit second...both on the gas and coasting in gear, I hear a muffled, soft popping sound which I think is coming from the tranny. Not rythmic...kinda random. Not loud or metallic either...real subtle. Same thing happens in third.
I notice it primarily in the a.m. when the car is cold which is what caught my attention, but cold here is 27-32 degrees max...not much worse. Its not really noticable in the afternoons. I've also not detected any fluid leaks.
Any thoughts? Thanks.

CRAP, I just saw your post for the first time. That doesn't sound like the noise that I was hearing. The noise of my busted tranny was more like a scraping sound, like driving over icy snow and not quite clearing it.
Of course, now that MINI Division is on the case, it's sure to be resolved...
