$12k is low... but there's always good deals out there if you're patient.
I bought my '06 MCSc slightly below trade-in value using the lowest valuation index I could find (edmunds.com). Compared to MSRP price sheet from Mini, it was a whopping 39.35% drop in value... or 13.12% per year. Now multiply that by 5 years ('06 to '11) and you have 65.55% depreciation. So my Mini should be around $14,490.
But... market dictates pricing! Using Autotrader.com, within 100 miles from me, the lowest MCSc is an '05 (69k) at $13.9k; highest is an '06 (12.7k) at $23k. In fact, I could probably sell mine close for $1-2k less for what I paid 3 years ago.
I think prices for Minis are whacky, especially in this economy.

Be patient and keep looking. Be willing to travel for your mini and do your research and know what to look for in a good car and maybe you could get one at an auction. Just a few months ago I got my 2006 with 36,000 miles on it for $10k then I put down $1k in repairs (that I kind of knew about when I bought it) and after registration it was about $12k in total. The RMV valued the car at $14k so I think I saved quite a bit.
Personally I would think twice about getting a car in "good condition" for that price coming from a dealer. I actually had to use some connections to get the car because the dealer was about to send it to the auction instead of repairing and then selling at a higher price. Maybe you will find yourself in a similar situation? Good luck.

Hi there, I pay $10000 for my 2006 Mini cooper S. It has 102K but it got all the trimmings, sports package, seat heater, double roof.....Also HK stereo. The car is in great condition (interior and exterior). I spent $250 installing aux and ipod adapter. My brother is a mechanic so I am not afraid if anything happpened to the car. So far so good. I have been looking at craigslist and people wants 10K for 2002 mini....
I am in Southern california if that helps. Bought the car off craigslist. Just have patience. I love my mini, it is a stick....makes me enjoy driving again. Good luck, have patience

Hey NTobis - where do you live?
2005-2006 were good years. 2006 is still considered the best year of MINIs to purchase. That being said, you really have to give the car a looking over.
Most likely things will need to be replaced at 87 (I am around that mileage now on mine).
Front control arm bushings will definitely need to be replaced. Check the upper engine mount (it's to the left of the engine), check the power steering fan (just about in the middle between the wheels under the car, looks like a computer fan), check to make sure all lights and options work properly, press the clutch in and quickly release it (when the engine is started) if you hear an audible clicking sound then things I still fine BUT you can use that as an excuse to bring the price down. Spark plugs will need to be replaced if they haven't been already, ignition wires and possibly the coil, etc. etc. Use any excuse you can and find anything wrong with the car to bring the price down. I think $11,9K is a good place to start but you can definitely get the price down from there. Remember, start low and try to work a deal with the seller.
If you can, get a reputable mechanic to look at the car.

Glad to help, once I bought my car and replaced the things that wore out (like the bushings and ignition wires, etc.) the car has been good to go, no other major repairs (knock on wood). So as long as you look over everything with an eagle eye, you should be fine. Good luck and keep us updated.
