What to look for before I buy?

I have searched for info on what areas to look at for problems before I buy an R53. Can anyone give me some things I should look at to know if there are problems with the car?

I'm looking at a 2 owner 03MCS w/ 83,000 6speed

Try searching "R53 Problems" here, lots of threads on this subject

I have an R50 so I can't give any first hand knowledge, but here's a link that may be helpful from MotoringFile:

you need to look for things that wear out over time\use and see if they have been serviced at all
- Ball joints
- Gaskets - these wear out over time.. oil pan, crank sensor, valve cover
- Power steering - fan and pump - check the condition of the connectors too as i have seen some fail before the actual pump
- Suspension - wears out and is hard to notice as it does it very slow and you get used to it - it's amazing how much different new suspension feels!
- Supercharger (change the fluid)
- Transmission - how smooth is it? change the fluid
- Cooling system - radiator hoses, thermostat

If you have a cheap OBD II reader they can also come in handy when youre looking at buying. Alot of times they will tell you some nice-to-know things about the engine.

The Buyer's Guide on MF is good, and element posted some good stuff to look for as well. Last but not least, take your prospective purchase to a MINI dealer or knowledgeable mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection. IMO the best ~$125 you can spend.

I kinda hate to diss older models, but if you can stick to '05 or '06, you'll benefit from all the improvements that MINI made along the way.

DannyHavok thanks for the link to the info. The car I am looking is at an auto auction. It has a SALVAGE title, but runs and drives. The passenger side bonnet wheel trim and inner fender is gone and the passenger side skirt is gone. No scratches or damage. I pulled the carfax and its never been reported as a wreck. Im just scratching my head as to why it has a salvage title. I know this certain auction house gets alot of repos, dea recovery, theft recovery, etc.
