R50/53 MCS vs. MC
I find it hilarious that some people in mini forums would dare say that their mini cooper is faster, better built or even handles better than a mini s. I have driven both...and my s should be coming in with 3 weeks. My cousin has a MCS in dark silver almost fully loaded and just recently my friend has bought a cooper. When I drive my cousins I feel so great and actually took a turn going 120 km/h....pretty crazy stuff. The thing I noticed when I get into the cooper is that it is not powerful at all. Its a good looking car (s i better looking) that has no power and cannot push itself in low or middle revs. I have to say that anyone saying that their mini cooper is fatser than a MCS should take a cat scan to make sure everything is ok... Can't wait for my mini....hope you have fun with yours.

lukee,
Welcome to the site.
Please read our Site Guidelines (No Personal Attacks.)
That said.... This topic has been run a few times now. The bottom line is that both cars are great in their own ways. Please remember that everyone may not have the same goal as yourself when buying a MINI.
As for people making the described argument above..... The proof is in the pudding..... Let's not sit on a web forum and aimlessly bicker about which is better. If someone really needs to prove the above then by all means Go to a drag strip and post the time slips. Or Go to a Track and post lap times.
Beyond that it's just useless banter. So please.... Let's keep things constructive and leave out the other stuff!
That said.... Again.. Welcome to the site. I think you will find that everyone here is very happy with their cars (MC or MCS) and very enthusiastic about the "WHOLE" MINI line.
Happy Motoring,
SW

neither mc or mcs has much push n the low end, not enough torque in either car...I owned the mcs, nice handling, but definitely lacking in power..read the new British CAR magazine for a review of the mcs angainst the new focus...they agreed, the lack of power of the mcs is a big disappointment.....regarding looks, they definitely could lose the garish hood scoop, looks to much like a WRX wannabe which blows away the mcs in accelleration......lowend, couldn't tell that much difference between the two cars, over 4000rpm, yeas the mcs is faster, but not as much as you would think....so a cat scan maybe in order, but for whom....lol!
BTW...I did drive a friend of mines mc that had the superchips tuning and huge difference...felt as fast or faster lowend than the mcs, but I wouldn't do it for fear of warranty issues....each to their own...cheers..

Styling:
I'd agree about the hood scoop. The cooper hood flows better with the cleaner lines of the car. The other thing the cooper hood allows for is more creative bonnet stripes. From experience, the S is pretty limited in bonnet stripe options since the hood has much more compound curves around the headlights.
Colors:
Now consider which Colors have been exclusive to each model
Cooper S exclusive colors: Dark Silver and Electric Blue
Cooper Exclusive Colors: Velvet Red, Silk Green, Black, BRG, and Indi Blue
Granted Black, BRG, and Indi are now available on the S, but even so they were exclusive Cooper colors for 6 months. Then there are the interiors, the Cooper gets way more interior options (BRG or Indi with Cordoba Leather - very nice).
Handling: Who's the true giant killer now?
All that said, in the end Sfiveten is right: both the Cooper and the S are still MINI's and are excellent cars. There are a lot of reasons people would choose either one (and it's not just $).

From theRoad & Track review of the COOPER:
In fact, the Cooper exudes such an immense sense of stability that you can go into a corner at a much higher speed, toss it around, and the car steadily tracks the road with confidence. Our slalom test revealed that the Mini can thread through the cones with moderate understeer and keep a blistering average speed of 67.6 mph, besting any current BMW, any Ferrari, and most Porsches. The skidpad test showed the modest steady-state grip of the Cooper's winter tires, with the car exhibiting heavy understeer and barely holding on at 0.79g. Just imagine what lower-profile higher-performance standard 15-in. dry-weather tires would do to improve the Mini's cornering grip.

Unfortunately, the scoop is more about functionality than style, right? I do agree with Dave, though, the bonnet lines are much nicer without the scoop.
Power is such a subjective thing, and it is the type of thing where you can "almost" never have enough...

Well put, Dave!
It's all a matter of personal preference and both the Cooper and the S are just so great....there really is something for ever personality when it comes to this car!

Trust me. I've had both and they are both great. Wait until he starts filling the S with petrol.....and looks at that sticker that says 24city 31highway on the S. The guy who wrote that had to have been on drugs. Just one of the reasons I miss my Cooper.....

I love my Cooper. Sometimes when I'm reading through these forums I get this uneasy feeling that there's bad things just around the corner: I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever with Ringo. No rattles, no stalls, no wind whistles. Just joy.
I chose my Cooper with Indi Blue & black without the extra chrome. I didn't get the S because I didn't like the hood scoop nor the spoiler. I wanted a completely understated appearance. This weekend, I saw an "S" with stripes, special wheels, checkered roof, rally lights and aero kit. Know what? I loved it, too!
I haven't seen or driven a bad MINI yet!

I just don't understand what the deal with this topic is. It is just personal preference. They are both great cars for different reasons. Everybody on this site bought the car that is right for them. That doesn't make either one better or worse, they are just different. I have a loaded Cooper that I LOVE! I could have an S, but didn't because for various reasons (hood scoop and to me the power was not a noticeable difference) it was not right for me. That doesn't make the S a bad car or say the Cooper is better, it was just what fit me. So get what makes you happy, but enough with all the negativity!
Astro: Yes, the hood scoop is functional as it is the air inlet for the cooling of the intercooler on the S. My only point really is that the hood scoop, while functional, does have some negative effects on the styling. I'm also ready to admit that for me that wasn't a deterent. I still would have liked a front mounted intercooler and a cooper hood though (however given the constraints on the packaging already, I realize that's not going to happen without further deteriorating the design).
I've been giving this subject a lot of thought since it came up this morning (and I was rather bored at work today too

There's some comparative testing in the November issue of GRASSROOTS MOTOR SPORTS magazine indicating that the standard MINI was faster off the blocks, thanks to different final drive gearing, and the MCS faster over a whole course, i.e., once the turbo kicked in. To me, it's all a bit academic. I like them both. As with anything else, there'll always be some car that's more powerful than yours anyway. Be content with what you have. Enjoy the scenery more than the HP. And, of course, motor on, and on ....

This is a joke right? I've viewed this site and many, many , many others. Who has ever said an MC is faster than an MC "S"? The specs speak for themselves. It's not at all an issue as you present, except with those with a "mine is better than yours" attitude. I have an MC and it is PLENTY fast and I've driven the "S". We live in the Los Angeles area so the extra "juice" of the "S" made no sense to me. It was fun for the test drive but, to appreciate that extra power in the area where I live, on any regular basis, I would have to be breaking every speed limit. If you're in a position to enjoy that extra boost then more "power" to you.
Such such silliness... it's fun to read how those who have bought both the MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S are not completely comfortable with the buying decisions they have made. That is what I make out of these silly discussions.
MCS vs MC is just too close of a comparison. How about we start a new one...
MC vs Ford Vipor
Now that should be more fun!

As a former Triumph TR-3 , TR-4 and MGB owner from the 60's and 70's I purchased my MC for the roadabiliy and the feel of the road and not it's power in a straight line. The MCS would've been nice to own but because there's no Autobahn where I live (Michigan) that extra horsepower would've been a waiste of money for me. Also, at the age of 55 years old, I'm in no big hurry to get anywhere fast anyways.
