Mini came back from the body shop.....

Well during a storm my mini got hit with flying shingles and the cap from the chimney....I have a $100 deductible so no big deal. I take it into a local shop.(I live a far distance from any mini dealer) I just moved here not long ago so of course I don't know anything about the shop...the appraiser recommended it. I've already brought it back once because they didn't put the black front fender pieces on right and they were flapping around and also they missed some of the damage. So today I take a really good look at the paint job they did. They had to repaint the drivers door as well as the hood and roof. Near the bottom of the door there is this weird rippling type affect as if water had frozen onto it. So I went to the other door to compare.....nope...no ripples....checked out the hood...yep, same rippling affect in one of the corners as well as another scratch they had missed. (not sure how they missed a scratch since they were spose to be painting the entire hood) I also noticed they didn't put the chrome trim back on properly around my headlight and so it jiggles.

Needless to say, i'm not very impressed and being a woman doesn't help much around there either.

What are my options here? Do I phone my insurance company? (I already paid my deductible to the garage) Do I try to make them redo the paint? I'll definitely be bringing it back to get that trim piece put back on right and try and get them to buff out the scratch.....I have a feeling theyre gonna be dicks when/if I ask them to fix what I would call a shitty paint job. I can try and post pics if anyone is interested.

Any advise to my situation would be great!

Thanks so much.

What state/country are you in? Different states/countries have different laws.

First off, my general experience is NEVER go to an appraiser recommended shop. They either get some sort of kickback or the insurance company gets good deals from them (since they do quick shoddy work). If you have the choice pick your own shop, here in Mass by law you can go wherever you want. I like to pick the places that have Porsches and Ferraris being worked on, you know those owners are picky!

Too late now, I know. :(

I would call your insurance company and let them know you are not satisfied, it might be too late if you already signed papers saying the work was completed so the shop could be paid. You didn't say if you signed the release for payment papers. If you didn't sign anything yet, def. let the insurance co know.

But it might not be too late, the insurance company can still hold back payment.

Did the inspector/adjuster come back out and look at the car? If not I would try to get them to look again and point on the problems. If they did, I am surprised he was OK with what you described.

Sorry you had a bad experience, lots of bad shops out there :( Good luck!

I have learned things the hard way too, one of them is I always look over my car before taking it back after I left it with someone else. Including rentals. There are people that are shady out there and will lie to cover their butts.

go to the shop, show the owner/manager, if its obvious, maybe he will be a stand up kind of person and simply fix it

Not enough info. Where are you located? What insurance company? (I worked both sides of the auto insurance/repair process for 18 years).

Thanks for all the great advise! I've got a few ideas now at least

I'm actually in Canada with Wawanesa Insurance. Too bad I can't call them(insurance company) now until monday....I wonder how long it takes for the body shop to be paid by them?

Call your adjuster, ask him/her to come reinspect the car. Point out what you have noted as flaws. The paint effect you described is known as "orange peel". Since the adjuster recommended the shop, he/she should be willing to stand up for you. Best of luck!

Sounds like they put too heavy a coat on. I'd take it back.

If your adjuster recommended the shop, chances are the shop is within their Network or Direct Repair program. The first step is to determine if that is the case or not. In general, if you repair outside of your insurance company Network or Direct Repair program, your insurance company will not warranty the quality of repairs. If you repair within, they do. Insurance companies do not recommend shoddy shops because insurance companies are required to stand behind the quality of work from shops they recommend.

As far as missed damage, it is up to your insurance company to determine if the damage is loss related. If it is indeed missed damage from your current loss, they will add it to your claim and pay to resolve it.
