R50/53 My triumph at the toll booth
Ok, so many of you have heard me gripe about those nosy people who think it is not at all rude to ask me how much I paid for my MINI. Well, I had a triumphant moment at the toll booth that I thought you'd all appreciate:
Idiot Pig Toll Guy: "Hey baby! Look at THAT and I don't mean the car! I'll take two of those!" (typical man...sorry to all the men on the board)
Me: "Hi"
Idiot Pig Toll Guy: "Hey, how much did you pay for that??!!"
Me: No response (just handed him my ticket and $1.15)
Idiot Pig Toll Guy: "That's one of those MINIs right? How much did you pay for that?!"
Me: "Don't you think that's a really personal question to be asking me?"
Idiot Pig Toll Guy: "Give me a break...I could just call the dealer and he could tell me!"
Me: "Exactly. Bye." (as I sped off)
Idiot Pig Toll Guy: (yelling after me) "Oh! So she's fiesty too!"
You bet your *** buddy.

Why, in your opinion, is it rude? Especially if it's a new car someone may not have seen/encountered before. I get bored of the question in the Ferrari but I don't think it rude. It definitely surprises a lot of people that a late 70s Ferrari 308 for under $20k typically... and a mid eighties 328 for $35k to $60k.
Just talking abou the MINI in conversation I've had a # of people ask how much - and since they sell for MSRP, why not tell them - there is no such thing as good or bad negotiation on these cars.
Am I just a typical insensitive man?

KPiglet,
I am getting tired of that question as well. An easy out is," I don't know, my significant other(ie.wife, husband, etc) got it for me," and smile. It is the only car I've ever owned that the question continuosly comes up and I don't think an answer is required. Toodles.

My friend told me I should whisper "I slept with the MINI dealer!" and wink.
From now on I think I will just say "Tell me how much you make and I will tell you if you can afford it."
I don't mind when people are generally interested in the car and ask it within the context of being really interested in getting one, etc. But there are people who ask just to be nosy. I had a guy pull up to me at a stoplight and yell out his window "What did you pay for that?" To me, that's as bad as asking someone how much they make or what their house cost....that's none of their business!

I would say the TONE would make or break the question. If someone was rude (as in KPiglet's case) then asking how much is rude. But if the person is polite and just curious, well then, I'd say it would be ok to ask.
Just my 2 cents...
Just my 2 cents...
The day before I drove down to the dealer to put my name on the list, my mom and I were at the chiropractor's. This guy(the chiropractor that is) loves to joke around and is very friendly with us, so as we were talking, my mom was really excited about the car and shouted out to him, "Oh guess what, we're going down to the mini cooper lot tomarrow and Katie's gonna get one!"
His immediate response, without even a moments pause was, "Oh yeah, those are quite expensive and any way they're impossible to get!" His tone was very defensive, and it really caught me off gaurd. I might as well have told him I was getting a jag!
He must have read something about the car to know there was a waiting list, yet he had no clue about the price. It's like he just assumed it would be expensive and I totally don't get why?
The car is really unique in that sometimes it gets put in the VW/Saturn kind of category, but then it's got the whole sportscar thing going for it too. I think when a lot of people first see it, they totally don't know what to make of it. The idea of price probably baffles them.
Maybe when people ask about the price we should respond with something like, "Well the car WAS made by bmw, and a lot of attention went to detail and the overall design, so I know what you're thinking. But, looks of course, can be decieving!"

Some of the people I work with were out in the parking lot admiring my MINI and contemplating price. One girl finally asked me, " those start around $30,000-Right?"
I told her they start at about half that and go up from there!
