My mind just doesn't know what to do with itself! I am about to order a MINI.
One problem, it was going to be a Cooper, but I have just seen this really cool 'S' driving about. Please please please help.

Do I order an 'S' without some of the extras I was going to have, or, order a Cooper with nearly everything?

Also, whats the fuel economy like on the 'S' 'cos where I live you have to sell body parts to keep your car going!

Bye

Harry-
I have a Cooper and LOVE it! I wouldn't have it any other way.
Just remember....whichever you choose...you'll be the happiest guy on the block!
Good luck!

I haven't figured the diff in gas mileage yet but it is significant, I think. I keep track but haven't done totals yet on the S. The Cooper I had averaged around 32mpg(over 6000 miles) but the S almost DEMANDS to be leaned on and it is tough to get good mpgs when you are trying to push your foot through the floor

Hello friend! I too was faced with your same problem! (although i have not placed my order yet so in a miniscule way i am STILL debating on the issue) But i had been set on getting a cooper.... but then i test drove an S one weekend and it blew me away! (especiall that electric blue..... that is a HOT color!) But for me, it boiled down to one thing.... neat gadgets and features! LOL If you're on a budget that would mean giving up all the options for a cooper S, i'd say go for the cooper! Because even though the mini itself is a great car...... what's the point of getting it hollowed out w/ no options? If tons of cool features is what you're after, I'd say go for a cooper! That's what i'm doing! I'm getting an almost filled to the brim cooper! I'd love to get a Cooper S but i'd haveta get all the options i'd want too... and that's pushing the price (for me) a little past what i had intended to spend! But the cooper w/ all of my features is just right!

Indeed! Tax, title, registration, dealer fees (only 299 at ft lauderdale mini! the lowest in the state...... or at least the lowest in south florida?!) etc.....

First, the data: the Cooper mileage (EPA) is 28/37, city/highway; Cooper S is quoted at 24/33mpg. So, you lose about 4 mpg in the city or highway (if you get the S).

On the other hand, the S comes standard with several options (wheels, suspension etc) that you would have to PAY for on the Cooper.

But the REAL question is about what kind of a car person you are. Is power, acceleration & handling EVERYTHING? If so, get the Cooper S (or a 911 Turbo).

Do you enjoy MOTORING in a stylish car, that handles really well; but don't feel the need to always "be in front"? Then you probably wouldn't "miss" the additional power of the MCS. Get the Cooper. If you want/need an automatic; you MUST get the Cooper.

But, be honest! If fuel economy is REALLY that important, then you should be looking at a different car altogether (Golf turbo diesel, or Honda "fill in the blanks"... that get 50+mpg).

Don't forget, the S does not have a spare tire. That was a big thing for me.

I have a Cooper and I love it. I like the refined hood styling. I love the S, too. But it seemed a bit 'aggressive' for such a cutie car [my opinion]

Some states have different rates on insurance, too, so check that out.

Either way, you'll love your car. Smiles are guaranteed and contagious!

Go for the base Cooper and just build it how you like it, you can still get the sport seats and the upgraded suspension (at least you could when I ordered mine... as mine has both...), and an 8.5 0-60 with a car that gets 29mpg (thats all I get, though I always have the AC on...) is pretty good! Besides, "S" models are hard to get your hands on, at least up here in Ohio they are. Boy do *I* sound redundant?

I got a Cooper. She is pretty loaded and I always blow the other cars away when leaving a stop light. I didn't notice much of a difference when I test drove an S, so it didn't seem worth the extra $3000 to me. Go drive both and decide, but I would not recommend getting a stripped down S. My rule is always buy every option you might want, that way you will never have any regrets. If you get an S but with no options you will always be thinking in the back of your head "I should have gotten the sunroof" (or fill in the blank with almost any other option) Just my opinion, take it for whatever it is worth.

I got the Cooper with every option I wanted on it. I had the same dilema as you. I've noticed the milage difference from my tdi golf ( but that car spoils you for gas mileage.) It is still good from what I understand, Ive been getting about 35mpg and I have a lead foot. Now what I am doing is saving up for the JCW upgrade. The Cooper is peppy but it does need just a little more punch IMHO. The JCW upgrade should give it that little bit more power it needs and it is said that it doesn't noticably effect mileage. win win! Love my Cooper! 4000km no rattles, creaks, or problems. Just pure Motoring fun!

Rocketboy_X's generic rule of thumb:

City Driving? Cooper
Stop and Go City Driving? Cooper w/CVT
Country/Highway/Thruway/2 Lane Highway Driving? Cooper S

If you don't 'need' the extra power, get a Cooper fully loaded... If you need to pass people on a 2 lane road because they're driving 50 in a 55    , get the MCS....

If you're leaning towards the S, you should get it. Both are great cars, but you don't want regrets.

Thanx to everyone who has given an answer to the biggest question in my life to date!

Cooper 0, 'S' 2

" If you're leaning towards the S, you should get it. Both are great cars, but you don't want regrets" (trixander). I'm leaning 'cos I have just test driven an 'S' with everything; and it was grrreat - no I am not Tony the tiger!

Cooper 0, 'S' 3 - looking good!

" I have a coop and I wish I can have the 'S' but if you going to order one anyway why not just go for the 'S' because you only live once.
about the fuel economy on the cooper and the 'S' is not that different. the mini don't really do good in the city but on the highway is wonderful on gas. hahhahhha" (laboyy). Hmmm... I only live twice. I'm leaning so far over towards an 'S' I have just fallen off my computer chair
