R50/53 GoMini Mag Quick Review from a Yank
Just picked up a copy of the new GoMini mag whilst over in the UK on business. Pretty nice mag with a nice mix of UK and US relevant articles (weighted towards the UK).
Numerous reviews of tricked out Minis, and a comparo of three: MCS (normal), MCS/JCW, and Graham Good Racing. Also, Monster Mini's MCS, and a MCS with £4,000 of wheels. Whew!
update: The Table of Contents:
*Mini One - girl got a Mini One for her 18th birthday and has put over £10,000 of mods into it.
*Pioneer Minis - three maxed out Minis w/ serious sound systems, one with 5,000 watts of power. They spent £27,000 on one, £30,000 on number two, and £34,000 on the third. The last one includes wheels that cost £3,000 a corner.
*Jeremy Clarkson - an influential auto reviewer, puts the MCS/JCW as "top of its class".
*Monster Mini - the US performance shop, 22 inch wheels and 220+ bhp.
*The Italian Job - interesting article on how they used Minis (32 of them) along with a 24-hour body shop. They also created electric motor driven Minis for the scenes in the LA subway (dubbed in the motor sounds later).
*Modified Cooper S - Taken for a ride in Southend.
*C cooper S - Carl Thompson's tricked out S, with the aforementioned £1,000 each wheels, and 248bhp/220 lbf ft of torque.
Other fun regular sections, including HowTo: Air Filters
Worth US$100+ for a two year subscription? Perhaps, it's a nice, high quality mag. The free postcards make it a bargain

>>can you remember what the shop was called? i live in the uk and have never heard of that mag. was it a super market?
Sure, it was an Esso garage, in Maidenhead. It is issue #1, just came out as a Dec/Jan issue, so it should be widely available. I think there's a thread here somewhere that says where you can order it online. It costs £3.80.

Aqualung, thanks so much for the review! I've heard lots of little disconnected tidbits but not a complete go-through of the mag. Sounds like great fun w/o having to sift through piles of info on other cars in which I have little or no interest. It'd be great if there was a US distributer, but I haven't seen anybody step forward...........yet! Anybody hear anything???

The same publisher puts out other magazines that many Barne's and Nobles etc carry so it is only a matter of time until you see them on the shelfs here. In talking with the some of their staff, they said they are actively trying to make this happen...hopefully that will occur before the next issue comes out which will be in just under 2 months.
Other notables with the mag - our friend Gabe Bridger and his site bridger.us/mini were mentioned in it

I live in California and got my first issue of GOMINI yesterday in the mail. Go to their website and follow the links to subscribe in the US.
I like the mag a lot, very high quality printing, stylish. If you like to mod your MINI, this is the mag for you. I found all the coverage on mods a bit much, wish they had included more "regular" content, but then, I'm not into mods.

My husband got me GoMini today from WHSmiths in Tonbridge (yes - another UK member here), and I've only really had time to have a quick glance through. Even so, I like what I see and would be keen to get it again.
I don't often buy car magazines, so don't really have anything to compare it to, but I was impressed with the range of articles, especially the Jeremy Clarkson interview and liked the way the advertisements reflected the content. Also - lots of shiny MCS pictures!
Even though this issue seemed to be very 'mod-biased' with lots of souped up and modded Minis it still kept my interest (I like my MINI the way it is, the only modification I intend to make is a set of stripes and possibly a sharkfin antenna)
Didn't like the feature on 'Mini stuff' - which came with the sub-heading 'bits and pieces no Mini should be without...' as I wouldn't want any of the bits they claim to be essential (neon light strips, low suspension springs etc.) and thought the non-mini related 'cool toys' page was a bit pointless - not a single reference or tenuous link to the MINI.
On the whole, worth getting I thought. Will have to see how the next few issues pan out before I would take the plunge with a subscription.

I used to live in Maidenhead, just a few blocks from Boulters Lock on the Thames.
Brings back good memories.
Did you spend much time in Maidenhead?
Andy
The Mag is a really great addition and one that's very much needed. However, at $109.00 for a 2 year, (US), subscription is a little steep for a bi-monthly periodical. Also, if the Brits can produce a "New MINI" mag, why can't us Yanks? Also, you will not find much more tech info in that mag than you can find here on this site!
Just my 2 cents.

jbing....
I ordered mine about the same time you did. Guess it may take a day or so longer to the West Coast of the US...that or the mail deliverer is rebelling since we get about 10-15 mail order catalogs a day!

I don't think you'll find it in US newsstands today, but I hope that situation changes soon. When exactly no one seems to knows at this point.
I wanted to get the mag because I'm another one of those owners who aren't into mods. (...my Coopers plenty quick for my driving needs and thrills!) The $$$s are worth it to me just to get my MINI fix. I also have enjoyed the wider perspective on all things things MINI found in the UK mags (...like the articles found in Mini World.).

If anyone in the US finds GOMINI on the newstand please let us know where you find it.
Can we special order through Borders or similar bookstore that carries international magazines?
