Since it's expensive and sometimes hard to find it must have been some pretty convincing advertising or whatever that got you started on it. I did notice it's now available from JC Whitney for $5.19 a quart. I noticed a few people complaining that Castrol, (MINI), synthetic wasn't a real synthetic. If this means it has a petroleum base isn't this also true for Mobile 1?

R.E., i talked to several guys that use it. they sell it at Pace Pontiac, a gm dealer in my area. they use it in their bikes and high performance engines and swear by it. there were also several articles about hp gains from just changing to R/P oil. hot rod, street rod and others have tested it and gave it great reviews.
I wanted a true full synthetic oil, so, since the guys i knew use it, that was good enough for me, only time will tell. they also sell it at summit racing along with redline. take yur pick. those two and amsoil are the only ones i considered, Tim

I haven't used Royal Purple but, perhaps this comment I read in Nutz & Boltz http://www.nutzandbotlz.org may be of interest. A reader asked "I'm just curious about Royal Purple synthetic oil. How would it be classified as a synthetic oil? How does it measure up against Redline? Their response was "It's hard to know exactly, because they don't publicize their ingredients. They used to have an olefin base stock, which would make them a Group IV. Since the emergence of cheap hydro cracked wax products (GroupIII), most commercially available synlubes have started using them in order to remain price competitive. Mobil-1 uses Naphtalene AN and another type of ingredient, which is similar in nature to hydro cracked wax, with a dufferent hydrocarbon arrangement. But RedLine has refused to go along with this trend, and continues to use esters (GroupV) as their base stock."

Apexer,
I did not find the comment, but did notice that the site is sponsored by Redline. When I checked on Royal Purple, I found out it was tested by Hot Rod TV, and Horsepower TV and showed increases in horsepower just by changing to it's use. I concluded that this meant less friction and therefore increased engine efficiency. R/P also states that it is made from a blend of synthetic oils. There is NO wax base in their oil. So, by your statement, wouldn't that make them a Group IV ? Anyway, IMHO it is a better oil than Redline.

fuzzyface. I never said that R/P oil wouldn't help make HP. I would agree that it appears that R/P is most likely a Group IV oil. RedLine, because they use an ester base stock is considered a Group V oil. The comment from Nutz&Boltz did not say that R/P used hydro cracked wax, only that "most commercially available synlubs have started using them to remain price competative". Now, I'm not sure of want their definition of "commercially available" is but, IMO I'd say what you can buy at your local Wal Mart, K-Mart, etc. You may want to call R/P and ask them if they are classified as a Group IV or Group III oil. Never mind, I called R/P myself and was told that they have a paraolfin base. From this I would say they are a Group IV oil which is a good thing. With regards to sponsors, this site, NAM has many sponsors and that doesn't take away from the product one sells vs another. Just my .02.

I did research, found for $4.99 a quart at Northern Auto Parts online. I have read nothing but positive statements. They also don't have a huge advertising budget like Mobil 1 etc..
