R50/53 Your Shifting Technique
Basically for all around driving...I agree with D. I am also old school and learned to shift by sound and feel. How many people are familiar with "3 on the tree"? Anyway for performance runs I have learned that a tach is a very usefull tool. I had the oppurtunity to do some half mile runs. I have found that on my MCS shifting at around 7200 seems to give me the faster times. I tried one run shifting closer to red line and another run shifting around 7000. The third and final run I did at 7200 and I gained over 2mph over any of my other runs

Shift lights are for fuel economy. The way the EPA test works, the manufacturer can program the shift light to provide the best economy for the test. If there is a shift light, the car will be driven according to the light. Using a shift light is the least fun way to drive a car.
I had a car that broke its clutch cable. Luckily the starter interlock was broken so I could start it in gear and actually drove it a short distance without a clutch. You can match the engine speed both upshifting and downshifting so there is no grinding noises.
MrWhoa seems to have the most interesting technique
