Occasionally I'll play a little game with the OBC.
I'll try to get the best fuel milage possible. I don't go to any extremes like pumping up the tires etc. Just drive it REAL easy and see how high I can get the mileage indicator. Honestly, it gets old after a while, and I just start tearing up the streets again.
The best I've done for a sustained period is 36.1 MPG. This is over the 60 mile round trip commute to work.
Anyone else try this?

BTW, my car is a MCS JCW.

mrbean,
I'm interested in knowing what speed and gear were you driving in to get 36 mpg? 6th gear at 60-65 mph? Cruise control on? Does it help with the mpg?

I read that the most fuel efficient speed for most cars is about 40-45 mph.

Can you check to see what is the best mpg you can get at 55 vs 65 mph. Most of my highways are 55 speed limit and we have just a few sections that are 60. The highest I go is 65 on these stretches. I don't have a computer readout for mpg so thanks for checking. Please post the results.

Good guessing.
Most of my commute is 6th gear. Speeds are anywhere from 50-70 mph.
There is the occasional traffic light.
I have noticed that 6th gear at 40-50 gives the best results. I once drove home from the gas station doing this. about a 5 mile trip. The OBC was giving me 38.7mpg by the time I pulled into my driveway. I don't really count this because it's not part of my "typical" speeds or roadways.

Easy, push in the clutch at 40 mph, hold it, then reset your mileage... 99.9 mpg, heehee.

I got 61.5mpg once while in limp mode. I was having problems with my spark plug wires (aftermarket) coming loose and causing a misfire. Check engine light came on, power went and fuel economy went up.

Normally I get about 25-26mpg

Using the OBC, my experiments on the highway showed 65mph to be the most efficient speed (5th gear in an MC). But my impression was that it was more to do with the RPMs, which is 3K at 65mph in 5th gear. From this I would assume that 3K RPMs is the most fuel efficient for whatever gear you happen to be in (again, for a 5-speed MC).

I'm no mechanic though, so that theory might be crap...

MCS ~18,700 miles on it at the time.
Left Sierra Vista, AZ and ended up in North Phoenix. 211 miles all highway and freeway. Cruise set at 61 MPH. OBC said 47 MPG. Hand calculated said 44.4 MPG.

Over a 2000+ mi road trip from the S.F. bay area to Victoria island B.C. and return, we got an average of 36.2 mpg *indicated*. This was in an MCS with a lot of freeway miles, but an almost equal amount or winding mountain roads (St. Helens, Crater Lake, Ranier), and very little stop-and-go driving.
