R50/53 how to disconnect check engine light
how to disconnect check engine light
i have a 05 cooper S. Every piece of my exhaust is aftermarker stainless steel. My engine light keeps getting thrown off. the code is the 02 sensor code. i put a O2 simulator on it, but was made aware that these dont always fix the problem and with mine it didnt fix the problem. the engine light comes and goes as it pleases and it drives me nuts. there has got to be a fuse wire i can cut or bulb i can remove to get rid of the light. i cant drive my car with pride with this light on so i have gotten to the point to where it has to go. Someone please tell me the trick to disable the light. thanks
i realize it will get rid of all the engine codes but it is worth the risk to me. Aftermarket exhaust is known to set the engine code off. Ive been to dealer several times and always its just O2 sensor code. it comes and goes which shouldnt be a problem except it literally drives me crazy. i have a 57 belair, 50 chevy pickup and a 67 chevy pickup.......NO ENGINE LIGHT ON these cars. I realize no computers as well but its nice not ever worrying about seeing a dang engine light- especially when u know the problem is just after market exhaust. someone somewhere has disabled this light- i need to know how its done.

If you care so little about the car just cut the power to the light.

Not a true fix but sounds like this would be up your alley...
I remember seeing a vendor site a couple years ago that offered a replacement icon for the warning light that read "OK".
Now when you drive and the light stays on.. Everything is "OK"!!!

As annoying as it is, cutting the bulb or disabling the CEL altogether is not a good idea. If something else is actually going wrong, you're gonna want to know....trust me.
Here's a neat way to get rid of the O2 sensor code. Different car, but the same idea has been used on many cars.

There is no bulb
there is an LED. If you really want to do it, open the module, find the LED and remove it from the PC board. It's a surface mount gizmo.
But this just removes the light. If you're good with electronics, you can hack the module to bring out a switch so you can turn it off. Then if you're curious, you can turn it on to see what it says.
But the codes will still be there if someone scans it. If you live where your car has to pass an emissions test, most check the stored codes and you'll fail if there are codes present.

Depends on what trips the light...

With High flow or no cats are installed the sensor can pick up on the efficiency issues and cause a light to come on.
Not having the light may make your car hard to sell, service, etc....fix the problem...and be sure it is running right so you get all the performance you have already paid for!! You spent thousands of $$$$$ for high performance....spend a few hundred and get a better O2 sim. Do it right and you will never regret it!!
Seconding what andyroo posted:
For the #2 post-cat sensor, the hip trick I've read about is to get a couple "spark plug anti-foul" adapters.
Drill one out inside to clear the O2 sensor.
Then screw it into the other, and put them into the O2 sensor bung on the exhaust pipe.
Then, put the O2 sensor into the adapter.
Heard this over on FEOA.net (my last two cars were Ford Escorts) and it's apparently a very handy track trick to get rid of the CEL due to the #2 O2 sensor figuring out that your cat's not functioning or missing. It works by pulling the O2 sensor mostly out of the exhaust flow.
