If you bought it used then the battery might need replacement.

Did you order the new key from a Mini dealer? They should program it for you.

you cant program the keys on the 02's without going to a dealer or someone with a GT-1. Those keys come with a tag that is VIN specific and you have to enter that code into the BC-1 (body control module) using the GT-1. If you dont have the tag..... key is USELESS...

Just go to the dealer...they did mine for free. They switched everything for me and even had me select the options I wanted (comfort opening).

BUMP.
Can I pick up a used key on eBay and then have it programmed to work with my car? I thought that the grooves on these keys were specific for a particular vehicle. This is important, because I only have 1 key and I need to get 1 or 2 more. Before any of you guys give me the wise guy routine, I realize you only need one key to operate the car...I'd just like to get another in case I lose my one and only...
Thanks in advance for your help...

NO, don't waste your money on ebay. It's not possible to recode a key to make it work on your car. You have to just order a new one.

And, yes, the grooves are 'car specific' - just like the 'teeth' on a house key...

And I'm in the same boat: living w/ one key since I got mine Oct. '07 :fingerscrossed:
