R50/53 How do I know I have a LSD?
How do I know I have a LSD?
Well I have had the car for about 8 months now and still don't know if I have a limited slip or not.
Never really wanted to spin the tires and find out.( yeah I know I'm a chicken
). So how can I find out besides peeling out?

In a rear wheel drive car, you can jack up the rear so that both wheels are off the ground, and turn one wheel: and if they spin opposite directions its non-LSD if they spin the same direction it is LSD equipped.
May have that backwards or completely wrong, as I am running a fever (swine flu?)
May not help you, as our MINIs are FWD...
So...yeah....

Either call a dealer with your VIN and ask them to print out what was ordered with the car (that's what I did) or do the other fun thing. Head over to an empty parking lot away from the law and rev up to about 3500 and pop the clutch if it's a manual (I hope so). Step outside and admire your handy work. If you have 2 nice even rubber marks, most likely you are an LSD guy.
method 1:
Go and do a BIG burn out ! if two wheels spin the entire time ... you have LSD (a slight turn and will know for sure)
method 2:
Jack the front of the car up (both wheels off the ground). turn one wheel in the direction of travel if the other turns in the same direction you have LSD.
method 3;
look at one of those old black velvet Jimi Henderix posters.
if yo look like him YOU are ON LSD

I may just try this, just that I have no time as of now since they are remodeling my driveway so I have to wait about a week
You can also check without so much abuse of the tires and drive train by getting yourself(and the car) onto some dirt. Try to peel out, .....same as above. If you can arrange it, put the left two wheels on pavement and the right two on dirt and try to accelerate. If both wheels pull and do not spin you have an LSD.
Point of interest, the stock LSD is NOT a locking type so it is possible to make one drive wheel slip under hard acceleration. If my memory is correct it is the GKN Super LSD that was installed in the 2005 - 2006 MCS, maybe even early 2nd Gen MCS. You can see it here; http://www.gkndriveline.com/drivelin...super-lsd.html

If you jack up both front wheels and put your tranny in gear and spin one wheel by hand, the other one will "ALWAYS" spin in the opposite direction. Limited or not. I cannot do anything else. When in neutral it can turn the same direction, but this doesn't prove anything.
I have LSD 06 MCS, I jacked up one wheel and then tried to pull out gently in my driveway. The up wheel just spun. These do not work like the old rear wheel drive limited slips.
Call a dealer and ask them to run your VIN.
