The mark of a MINI owner...

Does anyone else have one of these scars on their leg from leaning on a HOT exhaust tip?

I told my wife and kids to always stay away from those pipes. So, naturally ...I was the first to get burned.

Anyone else ever done this?

Dean.

Yep. Happened to our son. We call it the kiss of the MINI.

Actually, it's not funny. It's a design flaw that compromises safety.

I complained about this early on with our 2006 MCS, but was brushed off. They should have listened to me because MINI issued a recall on the second generation MCS (none for us that I know of).

I have no idea how you guys are doing this.

I have TRIED to burn my leg on the tips, but I can't get myself to put my leg in that position.

Watch out for the doors too, I forgot to move my hand once and broke all of my fingers. BMW doesn't want to recall cars to weld the doors shut.

This is the same sort of response that killed this topic once before. See the thread at https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...leg-photo.html. That thread deteriorated into comments about motorcycle exhaust burns, etc. etc. We had three different people burn a leg on the exhaust--two of them kids. Nobody did it twice. I've owned probably thirty cars over the years and have happily taken stuff out of the back of all of them without ever burning myself.

People are burning their legs just taking stuff out of the car. It's not stupidity on the part of the users, it's bad design.

Now if the idiots who killed the topic a couple of years ago had reacted reasonably, there might have been a recall on the Gen 1 MCS exhaust. Notice that it happened on the the Gen 2 MCS exhaust.

I guess I've owned my MINI long enough to realize candidly that it has design flaws. Some of these add "character" to the car, some are just plain old bad design. Yes, we're keeping the car. We like it. But we're mature enough to realize that just because we like something doesn't mean it is flawless.

"People are burning their legs just taking stuff out of the car."

That's exactly what happend to me. I am VERY careful about those pipes ...but one day I had the rear seats folded down and needed to pop them back up ...when I reached in from the back my leg touched the pipe.

It makes me wonder how many folks get/got burned by side-pipes on 'Vettes back in the 60s and 70s.

And how about motorcycles? I'd imagine you have to be very careful getting on/off a hot bike.

Dean.

I never said it was flawless. It might not be stupidity, but it IS carelessness.

The exhaust is hot, don't touch it. How hard is it, really? There are probably a hundred things that could be dangerous on any car. Don't stick your hand in the running fan, don't touch the hot brake rotors, don't open the coolant reservoir when hot, and don't touch a hot exhaust.

All these things are avoidable, but if you lack common sense or are careless, why should BMW have to fix something that isn't broken?

A lot. Do it once, and you wont do it again, though.

Only if you have no idea how to get on or off a bike.

I've had this car for over three years, and now have Borla exhaust tips that stick out at least 1/2" further than the factory tips, and have never burnt my leg on them. I'm not saying it's not possible, but I think if you pay attention it's not a problem. Maybe I'm a jerk, but I kinda laughed when they issued that service bulletin on the 07+ cars.

I'm a pretty careful guy ...I know how to avoid injury and have done a marvelous job of that in my 50 years.

Yes, I know the pipes are hot. Yes, I know if I touch the hot pipes I will get burned ...and I have remembered this very, very well. But, one time I had other things on my mind.

Was I careless? No, I was not.

I'm human ...I forget stuff sometimes. I was in a rush and had other things on my mind. S**t happens.

For the record, I started this thread to be humorous. I love my MINI, warts and all. If this should turn into a "Anyone that gets burned by their pipes is a moron" thread, I'll ask for it to be deleted.

Keep it real folks.

Nobody brushes by the running fan, the hot brake rotors, or the coolant reservoir. There is no way to do these things when you are simply using the car as it was intended to be used. The designersintended for people to take stuff out of the hatch, and people have brushed against the hot exhaust while doing this. You're also inferring that because it hasn't happened to you yet it cannot happen to people who behave reasonably.

Please just let the thread develop without further comment. This is a thread about people who have burned legs on the factory-installed exhaust tips. It's not a thread about people's supposed levels of intelligence, common sense, or anything else.

I'll also refrain from further comment.

Solution: Get a JCW exhaust, the tip aren't a part of the exhaust, so they don't get that hot.

It didn't happen to me until I added the Borla exhaust. Those tips stick out farther. Now I want where my legs are when leaning into the back of the MINI.

I am not sure I would call it a design flaw... One time I slammed my finger in the door and I tried to get the company to have a recall on the door closing...

JK... I hope your leg feels better.

Hi,

There is a recall on the car that is supposed to shorten the exhaust tip to make it harder to get burned on. Check with your dealer to see if your car has that done, if not, get it done.

i've never burned my leg on the exhaust, but i barely get into the boot. used to for groceries but now we use the fj cruiser for that. i dont cautiously avoid the exhaust, i guess i've just never gotten in the position to be burned. As the above poster stated, there is a recall.
