Just bought a used MINI, should I reset the ECU?

Whatsup everyone,

Happily driving a used 2006 MCS after two days! I was just curious, I've read a lot on this forum that the ECU "learns" the driver and there are some that say it helps it out quite a bit.

But anyways, if that's true should I reset my ECU so that it "learns" my driving habits? Nothing seems wrong with the car, but then again I wouldn't really know what it felt like driving off the lot on it's first day.

Just didn't want to really go along the whole, don't fix if it's not broken saying. But if you guys think it'll help, I'll give it a shot!

I bought an '05 and I was wondering if I should do the same thing. I don't think it would hurt, I was going to try it today! Mine has 40,000 miles on it (68,000 kilometers, Canadian here).

Only thing disconnecting the battery risks hurting is your radio presets.

I'd do it through the key/trip reset method. Some people were doubting if unplugging the batt cable would reset the ecu? It resets the ecu in my other car (domestic).

i bought an '06 with 36k on her a few months ago and did the reset with the online instructions; using the key, etc.... seems like it maybe helped my low end stumble a little but otherwise didn't do much but certainly didn't hurt. I would go ahead and do it... is completely different though than disconnecting the battery, that won't do it.

yeah just put the key in the ignition. hold the reset button on the dash while you turn the key to accessory position. then go through the options till you find the ecu reset i forget what number it is. i think 19 then 21 reset

Copied this from another thread.
Just reset mine, doesn't take too long.
  1. With the key in the ignition, but in the off position, press and hold down the odometer reset button with one hand, while holding the button down, switch the key in the ignition to position 1 (first click) with the other hand.
  2. The screen will have a number and the word “tESt”.
  3. Scroll through the numbers by pressing the odometer rest button, through to 19 and wait a moment. (Note: the number order is: 1,2,10,19)
  4. The message will say 19 "L i-off", flash to "L i-on", and back to "L i-off" again. When "log i-off" appears, press the odometer rest button again. You are now in the system.
  5. Scroll through to 21. tESt and wait a moment. 21.0 rESEt will come up. Press the button once.
  6. Your gauges will now make some sounds and movements. Once the lights come back on start your car. You have now reset your ECU and your MINI is now ready to relearn the new mods and your driving style.

Is there any real reason to do this? Does it REALLY change anything?

I did it to my R53 and to my wifes R50 right after we purchased them. With the R50 you could tell a dramatic difference in the cars shifting pattern once we reset the ECU (R50 is auto/R53 standard). The R50 would instantly shift into 2nd off the line and take a while to get going, but now it shifts according to my wifes style and more gun-ho off the line. Major difference and I highly recommend doing it. As for the technicalities, I don't have a clue. I just know the results of our personnal experience with two different model/year coope's.

Disconnecting the battery does the exact same thing.

And the folks that should know, have stated that this will do nothing but clear out the old adaptive values.....something you can do with a couple of hours of hard driving.

This is true. But for me going through the test screen is easier than taking my spare out and using the socket on the bolt above the battery cable then un loosening it then reinstalling it all.

also yes this does work, ive done it after every mod, including the 180tsat which i just did a few days ago. your MINI learns your new mod change and the way you drive with it. i think it is very important.

There's been years of debate......

on this subject with ardent believers in both camps. And from my perspective the bottom line is, if you think it will work for you then just do it.

I understand that the adaptive values change with an automatic transmission. Is there any difference with a manual?
