Any tips on painting the downposts on either side of the radio?
I guess sunblock and paint don't mix. I was at an airshow, very sunny. I sprayed sunblock on my legs. While driving home my right leg was leaning against the radio console downpost as usual. I noticed the sunblock 'wet' mark on it the next day and wiped it off.......with the silver paint. Now I have a big round white patch. So thinking of painting both radio console downposts Chili Red. Anybody done this? Any tips? Thanks
I removed my posts, removed a large section of the left one to make a curved recess so my leg would fit very comfortably, filled and rebuilt it with fiberglass and then painted both with silver paint to very closely match the original. Just remove, sand and repaint. May want to apply some of that clear plastic sheeting to the area where your legs touches. I"ll try to find the post and put it up.

don't feel to bad about this - a common wear point. no sunscreen assist but our 02 has a big white worn spot in the same place. at one time there were chromed replacements but I can't seem to find those anymore so paint with a couple of coats of clear is a reasonable way to go. they come off pretty easy.
you can get factory colors from plenty of sources in rattle cans. i've had good luck with color match with stuff from

one can of base color and one of clear should be plenty.
I'd sand with 400, prime then apply two coats of color and two of clear.

very easy job. The two down posted should take only 45 minutes to an hour to do. Couple of coats of paint some wet sanding to smooth them out few coats of clear and put them back on. as far as color I think the pervous links should help.

BTW, before sanding, wipe the part down with some paint thinner, or (carefully) some white gasoline (like Coleman fuel). BE CAREFUL not to use this stuff near an open flame, protect yoru skin, etc. If you got sunscreen or anything else on there and sand it, you just drive that contaminant into the plastic, and your paint may end up looking bad.
Then... sand with 220-400 grit, and paint. Several VERY light coats are much better than heavy, read the instructions on the can for recoating and drying time. Double the drying time if it's humid or cool, then clear.
Vinyl is a great way to go, but the downposts are curved and you may have to use a wetting solution and some heat to get the vinyl to conform - if in doubt, head over to a local sign shop that does "vehicle wraps" and have them do it - an advantage is the ability to install a pattern, like carbon fiber (3M makes some nice 3D effect c/f film).
