R50/53 Break In ....
I think they call it a break in period to see if it BREAKS.
I have always driven my cars hard from New,time will tell.
1275 miles and it still works GREAT,i am more than thrilled.
I am sure the local police now know where my S hides ...

Break in?? Actually all the engines are broke in at the factory!! Or run in! All the US and other car Mfgs do it, and I would assume( yep, that word) the BMWs do also!
I was at 90 in third befor the car had 200 miles on it! 122 MPH clearing 4th, and in deep trouble from the wife half way thru 5th!! My MCS is totally awsome!! I have always broke in as you would drive them!! I do and it has never given me any problems!!

When I picked up my S, the dealer said break in period was 1200 miles at no more then 3200 rpm (ZZZZZ). Called Mini USA, they said follow manual. Diligently completed that period and then raod tripped it out to Chicago and back. Total blast!! Any time I saved "blowing the doors off sedans on the interstate" was lost at ever stop by the people who gathered around to admire and learn about my car.
motor on!!
pure silver, black roof and mirrors, sport and premium, 17" minilite w/ performance.

>>Lol, funny you mention the police. The New York State Troopers released a statement saying how hard it is for them to catch up to the mini coopers to pull them over. lol.
Post a link to that! I'd love to see it.

Thumper,
I wrote to MINI and they specifically told me that there is a break in period. They have a specific guideline on what you should do. It consists of stuff like don't do ove 95 for the first so many miles and don't exceed 4500 RPM for the same ammount of time. Theres a bunch more too.
Cheers

Addendum...
When I was 19 I bought a1984 Dodge Colt Turbo (anyone know this car?)
My buddy bought one at the same time and drove her hard off the lot. I babied mine for the first 1500.
He had a valve job at ~80,000 miles and I never needed one. I left the car at ~150,000.
BTW, the Cooper is everything that the Colt Turbo didn't have.

>>The car will run fine if you drive it hard, the engine won't fall out of the car.
>>BUT. You'll shorten the longevity of the engine and components!
>>FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES. You'll thank me and them once your machine reaches 60,000+ miles!
Or drive the snot out of it and trade it in at 2 1/2 years for the new more powerful version of the car they'll come out with by then and repeat ad nauseum. The car only has to last through the wwarranty period because by then there is something out worth upgrading to.
Don't get me wrong - I like cars and there are some cars I'd love to (and will) keep LONG term - '87 Ferrari will be with me until I run it into the ground and if I do (which I'm thinking about) additionally get an old Mini Cooper S to sit with the new one I'll keep it for quite some time.
But, in my opinion any car that enters the OBDII era is basically a recyclable. That includes the MINI, current Ferrari's (360, 456, 550), etc. So much is plastic/degradable/recylcable. In 30 to 40 years we'll be going to car shows and still see the old Minis, but do you really (deep down in your heart) think we'll be seeing today's (i.e. 2002, 2003) MINIs at these car shows? I don't think so and if we do it will be the people who hermetically sealed them away in a car bubble with 3 miles on them and they'll not be able to start them becasue all hoses will leak like a sieve.
Anyway, just my opinion - only time will tell, right?

Who cares about car shows? I mean really, I didn't buy my MCS so i can show it off 20 years from now, or to try to trade it back in for a profit.... I bought one because I want one... and as much as I love it, I want to keep it for a LONG time... and even if I do have to get a new car (perish the thought  ), I'm sure i'll buy another MINI... and really, is it really that HORRIBLE to have to baby it a bit for the first 1400 miles? I'm almost at 1000 miles and i haven't had it for a month yet... and it's not like the car is going to give you a spanking if you dont follow the break in to the letter of the law.... So be kind to your MINI when it's new... it only behooves you in the long run...

No offense, but you're probably the same guy who would scream to high heaven if you bought that beat to snot car demanding that the dealer fix something that someone else had abused. I always treat my things as though I'll have them forever. Please post the VIN of your vehicle as a warning of one that people shouldn't buy after you trade it if you beat it early.
"Do unto others as others would do unto you"
Or something like that...

Well no offence but i do not beat the snot out of my machines as you so crudely worded it. I drive them fast and will drive this harder when chipped.
I do not buy used cars soooo i will not be complaining about some other persons problems. As for where this toy ends up,it gets passed on down the line.
To all of you fine people out there that know what you are talking about Happy Motoring and to those of you who are full of your self and....
you know who you are get a life.
