R50/53 The Italian Job
I have long been a fan of the movie THE ITALIAN JOB..and prior to buying my MINI last year -- I searched high and low for the video of the original.
Now having them both (many of us) on DVD -- wouldn't you agree that the chase scene is far more exciting on the ORIGINAL. With todays technology, we could have really had a nailbiter chase scene -- with police escapes, the MINI climbing over and jumping over.., and perhaps a nice scene at the beach.
Don't get me wrong -- I love both movies -- but the Original ROCKED. Do you agree????

The chase scene in the original was the only thing that saved that movie. The rest was so sloooow paced. I liked the remake better except for the chase scene. At least they didn't use any matrix type special effects.
Hello, Lisa4Peace.
I haven't seen the original yet, but we rented the new version on DVD this weekend & must say, the "Special Features" section shows a great deal more MINI-fun, than made it into the film!
I wish the section on "Driving Lessons" for the actors was 10 times as long!
Especially since MINI/BMW went out of their way to supply some 32 MINIs for them. ?!
?!

yes the original chase scene was quite comical and exciting at the same time. I saw it for the first time this weekend. I must say though, as an actor, Michael Kane(sp?) really sucks. The movie was very choppy, hard to follow and make sense of things, etc. The new one was done very well, it kept you interested through out, but the actors had no chemistry with each other or the viewer. I didn't give a crap what happened to them. My favorite part was listening to the mini's though. Anybody know what exhuast system they had?
Am I the only MINI owner that didn't enjoy the new Italian Job all that much? I've never seen the original, but I would like to at some point. I'm not saying that the new one totally sucked, but by and large the acting is just awful, and aside from the boat chase scene, I wasn't much impressed with the movie. I was very disappointed in the MINI chase scenes which I was expecting to be phenomenal but in my opinion fell short. I have a hard time enjoying ANY chase scene that isn't featured in the film Ronin!
>>I liked TIJ. But I agree with you Chitown, Ronin has got to have some of the best, if not THE BEST chase scenes in a movie!!
That chase through Paris was just outstanding!
Guess I'll have to nominate a couple for you youngsters to see before you make any more judgments:
#1. Chase scene in "Bullitt" Steve McQueen in Mustang on testosterone takes on MOPAR's best.
#2. Chase scene in "The French Connection" don't remember the cars, but the driving thorugh the streets of NYC was stunning.

I must say that I loved the new Italain Job.
I loved all the prep they put into the "job".
Charlize is just to damn HOT!
And the MINI chase was so much fun.
I loved listening to the engines whine.....so cool.
The original was a fun movie.
But I agree, it was choppy, to slow, and didn't have much direction.
It was almost like 3 different movies in 1.
The chase was the part that saves it.
But it wasn't what I expected.

I loved both Italian Jobs...
Ronin was a good movie as well... BUT... If you look close, half the smoke from the tires is really cheap effects. The cars miraculously repair them selves after being smashed...
Those are my only gripes..
Thanks

I AGREE! I saw the movie only once, and I think that it had definite potential, but- and this is completely PERSONAL OPINION- I think Marky Mark has to be the 3rd worst actor on the planet (closely following Keanu Reaves at #1 and George Clooney at #2). His acting style is atrocious and brings about the lack of "chemistry" someone else metioned. It's too bad he had to muck up the whole movie. BTW- I think Ed Norton is FABULOUS and has definitely proven time and again to be a very talented and versatile actor. The only other horrible acting in the movie was that big muscle guy who fixed up the MINIs. WOAH! Did that guy just step out of acting 101 or what??? Or perhaps Marky was his mentor!

Yes, the Original is still my favorite too - the new one has several good moments, but it's too serious! ... the whole "revenge" thing was just set up to be darker than the original's simple "heist" (to help the trade balance! yeah sure ...).
But, to be sure, the original had a script full of good old dry british humour - so dry, the dust of it must've blown right over some peoples' heads (choppy, hard to follow? puh-leeese ... ! ) ... and Caine is a bad actor? ... on what planet?
For an old Mini driver and restorer of shot-old-british-sports-cars, there are some parts of the original that are perfectly authentic - unlike some of the fantasy thrown into the remake ...

Ed Norton may be a good actor, but he might want to think about playing a different role at some point in his career. I liked his character in TIJ better the first time I saw him...in "The Score"...or was it "Rounders"...oh wait, I'm thinking of "Fight Club"...

There's a hidden Easter Egg in the new Italian Job DVD
Go to the Special Features menu
Got to the item at the top of the special features list
Press LEFT arrow
You'll see a blue MINI icon appear at the top of the screen
press SELECT/ENTER

Dry humor for sure. But that has nothing to do with the movie being so choppy. Two totally different things. And the blonde chic that pics him up in the beginning? The movie would be much better off just by deleting her completely.

It was a great chase but passing the same Beetle going down the same hill got a bit old around the 4th pass.
