R5/EMX Engine Scan Mini Cooper Reset Tool (2001-2006)

Any current thoughts on the R5/EMX Engine Scan Mini Cooper Reset Tool (2001-2006). I'm considering on doing some of my own maintenance and figured one of these types of tools would come in extremely handy.

Anyone with any experience using this or other units would be very helpful. I live in Canada and was hoping to find something around here but I would be willing to purchase online from the US if need be.

Thank You.

I'm new to MINIs but can't you just get the codes by looking at 14.0 in the system by accessing the ECU by the following procedure?

1) With the key in the off position press and hold the speedo reset button, turn the key to position one and the screen will say test and a number.
2) Go through the list by pressing the reset button upto test 19 and then wait.
3) The display should then say"log i-off" then "log i-on" over and over again....when "log i- off" appears again press the reset button ....and now you are in the system software.
4) Scroll upto 14.0 and then through 14.1, etc. The codes will be there.
5) To exit, turn ignition off

BTW, 21.0 will reset the software completly, I did it on the MINI to have it learn my driving.

You can also reset the service engine light and oil shange counter in a similar manner

1. Hold down the trip odometer button.
2. Insert ignition key and turn to the first position.
3. The word "test" will first appear on the odometer indicator and after a bit of time the current oil change interval will appear (e.g. 500, 2750, etc.)
4. When the number appears, release the trip button, then press & hold once more.
5. The current oil change interval number will flash.
6. Release the button, and then press & release again.
7. The Service interval is now reset.

I believe that the service interval and oil interval alternate, so if you repeat the above you can set oil service.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong. I got these from the "Things you don't know about your MINI" thread. I went through the thread and copied the ones that interested me and put them in a Word document.

Thank You!

I just picked up a 2005 mini cooper on the 23rd of August so I'm relatively new to the mini's as well. When I got home from the used car dealer I noticed the service engine indicator was on. After reading some of the manual I also noticed that the oil service read -13,000. The dealer asured me that the car passed a safety and emisions test and it was ready to go.

My experience with this dealer and the safety inspection by the mechanic is a topic for another thread but what I'm trying to determine now is whether the service engine indicator is referring to the oil service that needs to be done or something else? I guess from the above reply I could try to figure out the code and once I had the code I could likely look it up online?

I'm no mechanic but after looking at the front tires (worn down to the ware bars in a few spots) I'm concerned that there may be other things going on. I was hoping that the oil change had been done and simply not reset but when I checked the oil the levels where good but the oil was really dark. I'm taking it in today to get a second opinion and have anything fixed that needs to be. I'm too far from a mini dealer so I'm taking it to a local mechanic who is familiar with BMW.

Thanks again!

Through a series of problems I have my second MINI in about 6 weeks, both used (I have not yet taken actual ownership of the second one but have it to drive.

Check the cabin filter. In both of the MINIs I have/had the filter was filled with paper shreds, leaves and assorted junk. They obviously had not been changed from the originals.

Look on the forums here and ther is a thread where you can but them relatively cheaply, but if you are going after the dealer, you may as well as do that also.

Unfortunately, the codes stored in 14.0, etc. are not the usual obd codes
and no one really knows what they stand for (except perhaps the dealer,
and they're not telling).

Hmm, I did the MCS that I have right now and the numbers are

14.0 632800
14.1 642800
14.2 652800
14.3 000000

I figured the first three were constant codes (thy match the ones in the mini2 thread and 14.3 indicated no codes.

I wonedr if any one checked 14 and then used a code reader to see if there is some consistency or reason to the numbers.

If they are readable, there must be a list or conversion chart somewhere.

Thanks for the correction to my post.

When the 14.x codes appeared on my MINI, the check engine light was not on, and my Peake R5/EMX code reader showed no codes.
Also, clearing codes (such as one thrown by a loose spark plug wire) with the Peake R5/EMX did not erase the 14.x codes.

The light was not on mine either when I read those. That would seem to support my assumption that they indicate normal functioning.

I wonder if anyone had an engine light, read the codes at 14.x and then did an obd scan.

It would be nice to be able to ID the most common codes.

How many miles are on your 2005? If the service indicator is at -13,000 miles, I'm guessing that you have about 25,000-ish total miles on the car? It sounds like it came due for its first scheduled maintenance (just an oil change around 11-12k miles), and either the oil change wasn't performed, or the service indicator wasn't reset afterward.

Had the service indicator been reset, you'd now be counting down to the second scheduled maintenance ("Inspection I"), which usually comes due between 25k and 32k. If you can't find out anything about the car's service history, I would just have "Inspection I" performed now (it includes an oil change), and then reset the service counter so that it's counting down to the third scheduled service ("Oil Change").

After resetting the service counter, when you turn on the car, it should say "Oil Service" and 15,500 miles (or something close to that).

My mini has 62,000 Kilometers, I have all the available records / history and the last BMW service that I can trace back to is at 35,500K. I purchased it from a registered used dealer in Toronto. It had a safety inspection and an emissions test and the dealer said it was ready to go. I took it to a local BMW mechanic 2 days after I purchased the car for a second opinion. We did a diagnostic on it to determine why the service indicator light was on. According to his scan it has something to do with the O2 sensor. Since it's still under warranty (1yr left) I will take it to the dealer after my mechanic does the required service, changes the oil, re-checks the safety, etc. At a quick glance it was easy to tell that the front tires should have failed the original safety inspection and the back brakes / rotors are questionable. I will be taking it in tomorrow for the inspection / maintenance and hopefully back to a mini dealer to fix the 02 sensor by the end of the week, or early next week. I plan on writing a letter to my dealer and the mechanic who performed the initial inspection requesting that they cover those items that should have been fixed prior to the ownership transfer. I did both a carfax and the ontario used vehicle package which provided me with a detailed history on the car. I also contacted any dealer that was listed on any of my documents. The car was off lease but I did not feel comfortable trying to contact the previous owner, which is likely the only way to determine what happened between 35-61,000K

The disconcerning thing was that BMW Canada sold the car to a dealer in Toronto without servicing the car first. I guess you call this "as is". BMW canada said that they are not required to service the car prior to sale. Personally if I was a manufacturer I would not let a car go that was in need of some simple service that could effect the safety and life of the car. BMW Canada had the car at 61,000K and it would have had the service light on and -13,000K on the oil indicator. The car was just off lease and had been keyed (scratched). I guess they simply did not want to repair the damage? The dealer I purchased the car through did do a great job of fixing the paint (cosmetic). Overall, other than the above I'm really happy with the car. All of this could have been avoided if the used dealer simply would have brought it to a mini / BMW dealer for the safety and maintenance. It was actually a 10 min drive down the road and they could simply have incorporated it into the price of the vehicle. Anyway, that's my used car story.

This is a great forum and I look foward to learning more about my car. I guess the above was somewhat off topic. I'm really trying to learn more since I'd like to do some of my own maintenance on the car. Without some form of diagnostic tool it's difficult to figure out what I can and cannot repair myself.

Thanks again.
