R50/53 Dealer Mark-up
I'm looking to by a Cooper S and am finding that the only dealership in the area NOt charging substantial dealer mark-up has a 1 year wait for delivery. Otherwise the locl dealerships here (San Francisco Bay Area) are charging between $2000-$3000 over MSRP. I'd be grateful for anyone who has advice, tips, etc on how todo better than wait a year or pay 2g's over. i don't mind buying out of state and shipping here. Any help out there???! thanks, Jeff
check the other dealers in your state or neighboring states. check out mini of hamptons. they're on the home page on the top section. i've heard that mini of hawaii has sent some mini's over to the west coast cause they have a shorter wait period.
check around though, you shouldn't have to pay more than msrp.

yeah, your best bet is to get on the phone and shop around. I bought mine out of state and only paid about $400 over invoice for "etching" of the body panels and windows. The extra couple hundred bucks was worth not waiting a year to get the exact MINI I wanted in less than a month.
Roadshow MINI in Memphis has been great to me so far. Ask for Dorian, she is a great motoring advisor!

I noticed that most of the MINI's setting around the lot at Roadshow in Memphis had quite a lot dealer added "stuff" on them that you may or may not want. However, if you order you won't have to pay more than MSRP.
"Troy" has been very nice and puts up with a lot of phone calls from me asking, "when's it gonna be here."
Roadshow's toll free number is 1-866-295-2816. Troy's extension is 6875 and Dorian's is 6836. If you call please mention my name, Robert Stancliff. Maybe they'll give me a free something.

Yeah, it's true. The Ca. dealers can and do play hardball when it comes to selling the MINI's. I was on a list for an 03 MCS at East Bay MINI but found out that MINI of Hawaii had the car I wanted on the lot.
I called, bought the car and had it shipped to Oakland, and now I got my MCS. If I had not called MINI of Hawaii, I would still be on that darned list and still waiting.

Jeff,
You're right. The CA dealers ALL want $2,500 over MSRP to buy from them, except East Bay in Pleasanton because they've pre-sold their production allotments for future months, so that's why the long wait for a MCS.
The other posters are correct. Look out of state. I and 5 other folks that met online at MCO and MINI2 through posts like yours, all purchased MCS through Julie Saxa at Classic MINI in Mentor, OH. Classic is a MCO sponsor; and the only MINI dealer that sells parts and accessories at 20% off MSRP when you buy over the internet.
Our cars are September production, due to arrive in October. We've contracted with Concours Transport for an enclosed transporter to ship our cars to San Jose. Cost is now down to $1,000; and there's still room on the truck! I recommend you call Julie at 440 266-6700. She can tell you what your options are. She is the most knowledgable and honest salesperson I've met to date. And Classic has a lot of MCS allottment for October production.
MINI of the Hamptons may have cars in stock that meet your needs. The cost to ship a car to CA by them was quoted to me earlier at about $900 for an open carrier (remember what the weather is like back east from now to winter)
MINI of Hawaii also may be an option for you. The cost to ship back to the states was quoted by them to be $908 to the Port of Oakland.
I wouldn't recommend the Portland dealer, if you believe this thread on MCO from Mokita a few days ago https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ic=15516&4
In short, you do need to get on the phone and call the out of state dealers. And, remember, the closer you get to the west coast, the more markup there will be.
Again, I recommend Julie Saxa and Classic; but you have to see what works best for you. The beauty of Classic is the discount on the parts; no sales tax for items delivered out of state; and "free shipping" as they're coming with the car, including an aero kit and two JCW Kits for our California Classic MINI Buyers group.

Welcome to the California smart buyers club!
I saw an ad online at Mini2.com for the very car I wanted at Midwestern Mini (Ohio). Okay, it had the cold weather package that we don't really need here but I do like heated seats.
It had already been allocated for production so I even beat the ordering wait. They're taking bids for enclosed shipping companies now, will cost about $1500. I"d much rather pay that than the silly $2500 markup! Teach those guys a lesson!

The only reason they can charge such outrageous prices is because there are enough idiots willing to pay them (my sympathies to the idiots...).
With not much effort, you can get an MCS, configured exactly how you want it, from an out-of-state dealer for less than MSRP+500, including your travel costs. Make a MINI-vacation out of it by flying out and driving it back.
Although there are many nearby dealers, it might be more fun to buy your MCS from an east coast dealer, fly out and drive it back. What a great opportunity to enjoy a scenic drive through our beautiful country!
There's really no excuse for being victimized by California dealers.

I am also in CA. I got my MINI Cooper CVT from Irvine at MSRP. I had to drive 500 miles to get it. They only sell Cooper at MSRP. The Cooper S is $2500 over MSRP. If you do not need the car right away, you should go to East Bay MINI to order your car. It worth to wait.

Hi
I am part of the Calif 5, that Chief Charlie wrote about. Like yourself, I had tried to purchase a MCS from Concord, and they would not budge from the 2500 over. Lord knows that is equivalent to the tax on a car in CA, I just couldn't get myself to sigh on the dotted line, it seemed unamerican.
Pookey 13, had recommended MINI of Hampton, and I was checking them out, but I found better communications through Classic Mini.
My car will be arriving in CA filled to the gills with accessories, and other "dealer installed options, that I purchased on line from their parts dept. Thus, I will not be paying taxes on these since Classic is in Ohio. THis transaction has been painless, Julie Saxo has set up financing, and hooked me up with their parts department. I was given a production date on the phone the first day I contacted her, which wasn't that easy for her, as it was the day of the East COast blackout...but you see she took the initiative to get through come hell or high water to make a customers day.
Good luck with your search...and ask around you may find others willing to purchase from the same dealership and thus save each in the transportation costs.

Hey Jeff,
Another option for you... Call Peter Stillwell at Patrick MINI in Schaumberg (Chicago). He'll order just the combo you want, at MSRP, and ship it to CA for about $600. Got my MCS from them in June; couldn't have been a better transaction.
If you can stand the wait, my brother got his MC from East Bay and was equally pleased with the process.
I think the pricing strategy typical here in CA is short-sighted and greedy. Hopefully in time it will back-fire on those dealers that are gouging.
Best of luck,
James
