It's tough finding an 07 with what I want through a private dealer. Dealerships are pretty sold out. I would have to order an 09 for October delivery. I'm sure with the mark up, it would push it towards $30k.
data point
depreciation of a car a year older .... with more 'stuff' .... vs a year newer with different stuff ... depends how YOU decide to crunch the numbers.
But if I decided to sell you my 07 .... would you be willing to pay full sticker price? It has less than 10,000 miles and approaches 12 months ownership.
everything is for sale .... the question is, how actively are we negotiating
I simply offer it as a piece of data

What's sticker on you car? I found an 07 MCSa with premium, sport, DSC, HK sound, 15k miles for $25k. I've been trying to get in touch with this owner but no luck.

Forgot to mention, it's a stealership. Blue book on the car is around $25/$26 for private party.
I found a private party one with practically the same options (no checkmate package) but 40k miles for $21k. No extended warranty.

That's full sticker....
I'm just pointing to the fact, that you are talking full sticker price of a slightly different optioned car, a year newer.
What's the sticker...like I said OOPS, my bad, I did not sticker for the same.....LESS, my 07 as described stickered for $25,600. Your deal exceeds sticker of a newer car. And note some things that were extra cost on GEN1, became stock on GEN2....fog lights for example
Your call ... I won't tell you which is better...and mine ain't for sale...'til you make an offer....
Want the '79? Now THAT'S a Mini
no fog lights tho

Understood. Thanks for pointing it out. I probably won't pull the trigger on it. Just trying to get an idea of what people thought.
Buy new...get EXACTLY what you want...and enjoy the experience of getting to know every nuance of your MINI.
Hmmm...ask the stealership to run a maintenance history report for you. I have to wonder if it's from their loaner fleet or perhaps a demo. If it's either of those two possibilities, I can assure you that the stealership did NOT pay full retail for the extended warranty but they are certainly adding the full retail to the selling price.

Agreed. So the question remains, a semi-fully loaded 06 or an almost bare bone 07? I guess it's just personal preference.
What if you found a 06 JCW with 16k miles for $28k. All packages (premium, sport, convenience, chrono and cold weather), anthracite headliner, xenon, HK sound, but minus navigation?

that sounds like the best deal of all of them except maybe try negotiating to 27 or 26500...its sounds a little steep considering the car was probably purchased either at the end of 05 or early 06 so its at best two years old now. It probably sold "back then" for 28 or 29 maybe close to 30 so 2 grand in two years for depreciation...doesn't seem like enough. Remember that JCW was a $4500 option from the factory so that adds a lot to the sticker price. I paid 25 for my 05 with premium sport and cold weather..no jcw just h/k and lsd so add the JCW to that along with convenience you got your self almost 30k.

i was looking for a long time - here, cars.com, autotrader.com, vehix.com. I also downloaded a free "craigslist reader" program (just google it).
Anyway, after all of this searching, I got a 2005 MCSa with sport, premium, convenience, chrono package, etc. All but nav, essentially. It has 30,500 miles and I paid $19,000. Great condition - not a chip in the hood or anything. I have seen similarly optioned non-S going for about the same, so I think I did pretty well.
Bottom line is that patience pays off. IMO, I think that your first post ($26.5k) isn't a very good deal at all.
