Had the cart boy at the grocery store ask me today how much I paid for my 1999 Jetta. I told him I leased it and didn't pay for it.

I've read posts from people on here that people ask them how much you paid for your MINI. If I get that from peeps after I pick up mine in the next week or so I'm gonna slit my wrists.

Can't believe strangers are so bold.

It’s part of the territory – when you buy something as unique as a MINI, people will ask. Don’t take it personal; it’s just human nature to ask about things they’ve never seen. Price is a big factor in buying a car, so when someone asks me I tell him or her and I’m not offended.

I don't mind really, but what I hate is when people make a face when I say the car was 25k, and they look at me like I got robbed.

I get people asking all the time how much the car cost. I ususally just say that they start at $16000 and leave it at that.

You will be asked. You just need to come up with a clever response.

I just say things from - "Excatly what the sticker said", or "I got a great deal, I would have paid more for this car", "Half the price of your Bimmer", "A little over 20".

Things like that. Or it's fun when they hava a Ford Focus or a Toyata Echo. Then I say "about the same price you did"

I get that too---when I tell people about my "soon to be in my hands" dream car. It's much easier to say it starts at $16K and goes up from there. If they continue to press about my MC, I tell them it's $25K, but that includes most of the options, leather, Nav, and sales tax, and then they are ok with it. Of course I have still gotten some crazy stares and that's fine. I know who the crazy one is!

The funny thing is that people who dont know anything about the mini think it is like $35-40k, and then you tell them the price they are shocked that you get all that for your $$$.

I had a lady pull up beside me at a gas pump and ask how much I paid for my MCS, I told her a little under 25K. Her eyes bugged out, "that's all, I thought it would cost around 50K", I about fell out. She was driving a Mercedes Kompressor.

I agree. I have asked a few, what they think it's worth and people put out 30, 35+

I have also had people think the car cost more than it did, like $40,000.

I agree that it's rude to ask one the price, guess I'm old-fashioned that way!

I just tell them I paid $25,815.00 and I don’t take offense as the car is relatively new on the market and many people just don’t know the prices. And I also point out that the car is equipped with almost every option available at that price. It may be a small car, but it is a lot of bang for the buck!

i had a guy ask me if its true that MINI is owned by Roll-Royce. HAHAH. I should have said yes. I get that question all the time. I used to feel uncomfortable but now i say "just under 25." I agree most people think it costs a lot of money. Thats fine by me. BTW the MINI has some street credibility too. I was down the shore and these black guys with bandanas and wife beaters walked by and the heard them say "I like that" and another said "yea, i heard their quick as **** too."

One time I was on my way to Target. I parked and discovered the car behind me followed me right to my space. The lady got out and began a 15 minute conversation right there (whith her husband's car still parked behind my space)! In the conversation it came up about the cost. I did become uncomfortable, but stated the price at like 25k. She flipped. After telling her about the dealer and how I liked my MINI, I think I turned her off when I mentioned the price. I think that's a great price for everything the car has and don't know why people think it's a lot of $. Like ppl. already said, some others think the car costs WAY more (I get told about this a lot too--makes me feel good). BTW since BMW owns MINI and Rolls Royce, your car kinda is a rolls .

I think people are curious how much the car sells for. I usually say about $17,000 for a MC and about $20,000 for an MCS. Loaded MCS goes for $25,000.
Worse than that is the 5 or 6 month wait. I can buy a Camry SE for about $25,000 so I don't think that people are really that surprised about the price. If they want a lower price then they can go to Europe and pick up a MINI ONE for a bit less.

Everyone I know, KNOWS I've ordered my MCS. And there have been some questions about what do those MINIs cost? I've found my best answer is "the same as what a new Honda Accord Coupe would cost me" People can handle that. They then get into if it costs more to special order them,etc...

I do like the idea of "they start at $16,000 and go up from there"... I'll file that away for future use!

If I can get rid of my old car in time to buy the MINI I just put on hold today, I don't care what people stop and ask me about.

I'll be sooooo happy I'll tell them anything they want to know! Hell, I won't care if they ask me my age or my weight either!

I find it even more amazing that anyone would get offended by the question about cost. Why are we so darn private about money matters in this country? It's not like they asked you how much money you make. It's a car. It can be purchased on the open market. It's not personal at all IMO.

To each his/her own.

Warning... opinion forthcoming:

I believe that the moment you take offense at someone asking how much you paid for a material object, you have given money far too much power over you. I mean, people DO know that you paid for the car, and they can deduce all they want from that point about how much cars in general can cost. So what's the biggie if you just tell 'em? Without making any faces or adding any subjective commentary like "It was so cheap." Just flat out. It's a monetarily acquired posession, just like a really big pack of gum. Do people get offended when asked how much a Big Grab of Doritos cost?

I actually had someone last week ask me how I could afford a car that cost 50-60k! He was shocked to find out that the best handling car in the world (IMO) is actually affordable and relatively inexpensive for most people looking for a new car.

I told a friend at work that I was thinking about getting one.

Friend: "Aren't they expensive?"
Me: "No, only about $26K for what I want."
Friend: "Really???"

I don't think money has power over me or anything, I'm just wowed that some people are so bold. I don't care if they ask, that's cool, but it just catches me off guard. I like telling people about Coop.

Hi Robyn,

Tell us about the Mini you put on hold. Or would that be bad luck?

By the way, how old are you, and how much do you weigh? LOL!

You don't have to answer the last two questions. I'm just having fun.

Good Luck selling the Passat.

Steven

The car is an IB/W MCS with all 3 packages, rain sensing wipers, H/K system, and rally lights. I couldn't believe when I walked into the dealership a few weeks ago and there it was exactly as I "built" mine on the website (except for the lights). Went back a week later to get a part for my BMW so I "visited" it again. Still there and still for sale. Today, I put the VW up for sale and went back for another "visit". STILL there and STILL available. I figured it was a sign from above that the car was meant for me.

Oh yeah, and I'm 31.
