R50/53 2006 Tranny Recall
A guy I work with who just bought won had it recalled after hearing a ticking noise upon startup.
Once he put in gear it went away.
Ended up being a problem with the flywheel and tranny and costs approx. $8,000 he said.
He couldn't remember the VIN numbers or what calls that fall in between the VIN are being recalled.
But he knows 2006 Cooper S for sure as his in for repair now.

Okay so I called MINI directyly and they are saying there is no recall on my VIN.
I tried to get the VIN where recalls would fall between but he would not give that out.
Said you would get a letter but I know someone that is doing the recall currently and he did not get a letter from MINI he had to call them and tell them the problem and then bug them about it before they gave him the recall order.
I am going to call a local dealer later and see how that goes.

Recall
I had my Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) and clutch replaced at 29,000 miles last November, are you sure this other guy had his TRANSMISSION replaced as well under a recall?
I thought that recalls were sent out to the owners via mass mail. Lord knows I received my share when I owned my Ford.

Well I don't know who this is that is POSITIVE there is a recal, but I just checked everywhere I could on the dealer site for MINI (I'm a tech) and I can't find anything that shows a recall on 06 Trans. Yes they have their known issues but nothing that is set in stone.
Recalls by law have to be posted at the NHSTA.gov site. The last MINI recall was 04V348000 for 2004 effecting 1193 cars regarding TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS
Now there is a service bulletin about the flywheels. By routing BMW/MINI does not make Service Bulletins public. There are some sites where you can subscribe to them. This issue does not effect every Manual Transmission S and MINI did make a change in the flywheel according to the ETK in 05/06.

I don't believe this was ever a recall. I belive it was a TSB. These are handled on a problem by problem basis .
So i would have to have mini charge me for the inspection at like 140 bucks? just to find out that i dont have the right vin number to get this fixexd?.
i dont think so.
Unless someone can prove that im gonna get this fixed ill deal with the noise and crap associated with it.

so what would they do with previous years with the same problem, my 04 mcs with 61k does the same thing , would the mileage take it out of any tsb i know there is no warranty on it
i got the car in feb of this year and the sound started about 2 weeks after i got it, i get the ticking noise in the morning, and the flywheel moan during take off

Yeah im kinda tired of Bmw. you spend this much on a car and all you get is screwed around and they dont take responsibility for any of it. thats why im gonna go aftermarket for a nice clutch kit to handle more power that i umm need.
Clutch
I plan on doing the same regarding the after-market clutch and I think I will dump the DMF in the process next time I need to replace the clutch/DMF.

Hi everyone welcome to the Club. Here is my situation on my 2004 mcs I went to the dealer on 2008/07/27 for the noise related to the flyweel and with no problem they have change the transmition and cables and hose all under warranty.
Now the noise has came back and I went back to the dealer to see what they do about it, the tech took it out for the test drive and come back telling me that the dual mass flyweel is noisy so i ask them why the flywell was not
change
they made the mistake and now they want me to pay to change the flyweel no way I said .. they are suppose to call me this week to give me some news about this.. it not my fault if they did no dianostic the right problem..

Auto manufacturers loathe declaring recalls. They are expensive and damage the model's reputation. So while manufacturers can issue recalls on their own, they don't do it often.
AFAIK the only other recalls are made when the government insists on them [safety related issues.]
In any event, unless there is a serious safety issue, recalls take some time to get posted on government lists.
In lieu of the more serious recalls, manufacturers issue Service Bulletins. These are posted online too. Service Bulletins are available to dealerships so they can look them up when someone comes in with a problem.
Service Bulletins typically say what the problem is, what is the fix, and usually says what the manufacturer will pay for the repairs [ranging from cost of part, to 100% parts and labor.]
Many times consumer agencies [such as Consumer Reports] refer to Service Bulletins as "Secret Warranties" because manufacturers will NOT publicize the problem, fix and that they will cover the repairs 100% even if the car is out of warranty.
As I "recall," there are various places on the Net that list "secret warranties" that are out there.
Many Sites also tell you how to "argue" with the dealership/manufacturer to get the repairs covered under the manufacturer's secret warranty [Service Bulletin.]
With the advent of the Net, I'd look around for info on this issue as these kinds of matters are discussed like wildfire nowadays.
Also, depending on your relationship with a dealer service department [or communication skills with anyone] I'd call around to the various MINI dealers to find out about the issue and fix. I say to "call around" because your local dealership may not be that knowledgeable.
Some dealerships do not want to acknowledge problems because often the manufacturers require the local dealership to bear some, if not all, the cost on parts and repairs [depending on the issue/problem.] So there is an incentive for some dealerships to tell you there are no recalls, no service bulletins and that it's all in your head.
All of the above is from my having a few lawsuits against dealerships and service departments over the years. Disclaimer: your experience may differ.
