We ordered our MC in May and had an August build date. Well we got lucky and caught an earlier build date in July. The car was actually born on the forth of July. We are very excited to get our MINI, and we get the call from the dealer on Saturday that Ruby Waters has arrived! Well now we need to wait because the gal at the dealer that handles all the financing was on Vacation until today (Wednesday). Well she get back today, adn my wife and I have both arrange to go pick up the car today and I call the dealership to make sure everything is OK. Well it's NOT! The certificate of origin has not arrived yet.... What gives. Why do We need it? We only need it to register, but why? We should be able to at least drive the car today, but they won't let us. To make things worse now I have to go get the car alone tomorrow, and then drive it home to my wife (this is her car) then we get to drive back to the dealer to get my car and then caravan home... all this because we have to get it tomorrow instead of today....

What a PITA...

When I bought my WRX the CO was inside the window with the window sticker...

WHAT A CONCEPT....

Maybe MINI could take some notes on that one....

Sorry, but I'm a bit upset....

Ben

Oh yeah is $411/6 months good for insurance on a MC?

Sorry to hear about these delays and problems. Any excuse to drive the car more like more trips is "good" in my book.
I'm looking for places to go. Can't you get someone to give you a ride down there and drop you off so that you don't have to go twice? Carpool with someone that works at the dealership that might live near? Shorten the distance. Catch a train or bus and bill the dealership for the hassle?

I think he means $411 per 6 month period. That is better than my rate so good work. It all depends where you live. More for urban and more for trouble areas like LA or NY city.

My WRX is $525/6 months or $87.50 for one month...

Is that good?

Ben,

Remember the old addage, "It's not over until the paperwork is done"? So it goes with Ruby. Having worked import/export, I can assure you that goods and their paperwork travel at different speeds. Generally, there is only a 48 to 72 hour lapse at most, but I've seen some SNAFUs that took weeks due to the wrong number or description. What you are waiting for is Uncle Sam to get his before you get yours. As a taxpaying American Citizen it is your duty to sacrifice so that your Uncle can continue to spend. Just remember, this is your contribution to the negative trade deficit . At least its summertime; go and enjoy a nice cool gin and tonic (use British gin too) and console yourself that Ruby will be free some time soon. I know waiting is hell, but you did get an earlier production date than expected.

Ben, I know your pain. About 11 months ago, I posted a very similar post to this. After nearly 2 months of waiting and watching my car get built, I had to sit on my hands FOR A WHOLE WEEK while my car was actually at the dealer without its certificate of origin. Drove me friggin' nuts...and I posted to that effect.

For whatever reason, BMW ships cars out of schedule with the paperwork necessary for them to be sold. The problem is worse this time of year (summer) and at the end of the model year when cars really flood in at the port. Yeah, it's really, really, maddening and something that you'd think that they've have learned how to deal with. But no. Welcome to BMW and MINIUSA. In all fairness, other manufacturers probably do this too...but that's no consolation now.

So, hang in there. If your situation is just like mine, you'll spend a couple of days on the phone checking with the dealer to see what arrived via FedEx...and then it WILL get there, and you'll get your car! After which, all of this will seem pretty minor.

Yeah, I'm trying to work out a ride, but the licence plate thing makes it tough... I need to bring in the plates of one of our 2 cars, and this means they must be parked off street untill they get them back on... All the places I can do that will lock up the car over night leaving me no way to get to work in the AM.... Very tricky... Plus the car is in Peabody Mass, I work in Providence (1.5 hours) and live in Newport (1.75 hours) so not many people are willing to drop me off and no sales people live here. Also I have to go after work, so this limits it.

I am thinking the drive up alone, Drive MINI home, pick up wife, Drive MINI back up, Caravan MINI and WRX home will work, and I don't think we will mind the drive....

I remember when I got my WRX (both times as the first one was totalled (not my fault)) I couldn't sleep at all that night I brought it home and had to just go for a drive.... sorry go motoring...

However it works out we are stoked for Ruby Waters to be home.... Oh yeah, Friday I get to have the please of spending the afternoon at the DMV getting her registered....

Who is your provider? That is WAY less than I pay...my insurance just went up a whole bunch and I'm not sure why....I didn't have an accident or anything like that.

Insurance varies from state to state - driver to driver - as you know.

We pay $396/6 months for our MCS - we have USAA. And that is with having a few points for an accident hubby had a few years back and 2 kids on our policy.

L.Mini, you also look to be in your 20's from your sig line. My girlfriend is 21 with no tickets and her insurance will be 725/6 months. I don't know why yours is so high. Where do you live?

L.Mini--- A friend of mine recently was told by his insurance company that they were hiking rates 30% across the board!! He went shopping and found a place that ended up cheaper overall then what he was paying.

In other words... go insurance shopping! USAA and Geico are the best IMO.. but you'll have to be military or related to a military member directly for USAA.

Best of luck!

If we're going to start the "Insurance" thread again, people need to be providing their ages and gender (assuming the latter is not obvious).

Why the hoo-hay do you need to bring in plates from a different car?!?! Isn't it illegal to have plates registered to one car on another?!?!? Am I missing something here!?!? Do they not issue trip permits from the dealer on new cars? That makes ZERO sense.

oh, oh! I've got this one...

BECAUSE MASS DOESN'T ISSUE TEMP PLATES!

Yet another stupid rule in our rule-infested state. They also don't legally allow temp plates from other states (e.g., NY). That's why I had to either do RMV work by mail or transfer physical plates when I bought my car in NY and drove it home to MA. BTW, this particular rule is rumored to have been created solely as job protection for the RMV "runners" employed by most new car dealers. Said runners make a living physically going to the RMV to register new cars for customers. Unbelievable, but true.

Oh, there ARE "Dealer" and "Repair" plates...but these seem restricted to tow trucks and various pieces of heavy equipment that for some reason can drive with Dealer or Repair plates (and no state inspection sticker) for years.

It's a wicked PITA, butt since I live in RI and I am buying the car in TRaxachusetts, this is how it works:

Normal MA buyer and resident gets a sticker on back of vehicle. Does not apply to non Mass resident...

Normal RI buyer in RI get 20 day (I think) temp tag and dealer usually registers for you.

Live in RI, buy in MASS.... No temp MA tag, and no temp RI tag for a new car... they will only issue temp ri tag if I am buying a used car... No temp MA tag either, so I either buy the car and take all the papers to the DMV, get plates, and then drive back and pick her up, or they allow you to take the plates off soemthing you have registered in your name (you must find someplace to park it off street since it is tagless though...) and put those plates on your new car for 72 hours. within the 72 hour you must get the new vehicle registered, and if you get pulled over for any reason (like that ever happens in a MINI) you must show them the bill of sale and explain it to the officer.... Wicked confusing, I know, but I spent 30 inutes on the phone with the DMV lady yesterday getting it figured out....

As for Insurance rates mine are as posted above:
I mean $411/6 months, or $68.50 for one month...
My WRX is $525/6 months or $87.50 for one month...

We are both 25, have clean records (thank you judge for dissmissing my case!!!), we are married, recent college grads, and it is with USAA (my Dad was "in the navy....&quot so that helps us out a bit... We live in Newport RI, but we have on street parking so that hurts a bit...

Ben,

and sorry to start another ins thread....

Just meant to get some simpathy.....

Ben...That sucks but at least its here. I feel sorry for the people who have not even placed the order yet and are on a list. Relax man you waited this long.

L.mini I pay about the same. I have GEICO as my provider. You should call. Remember age, record, location have lots to do with what you pay which I'm sure you know.

Hey, Why would anybody want to be domiciled in Taxachusettes? Even if you can survive the everyday lack of personal freedom, you still have to contend with the likes of Kerry and Kennedy and your Mothernor who would rather have state employees provide her with day-care than run the friggin' Commonwealth. If you must work there, live in New Hampshire where the motto is "Live free or die" Now that's Yankee ingenuity!

L Mini ... I'm 35, wife is 22 ... no tickets or accidents for either of us ... we WERE paying about $600/year for the Mini (although that rate was only effective for the 1 week it was hidden before we got married) ... but since we just got married we got another discount (the we're married so we must be more responsible discount) and now we're down to about $500/year... our limits aren't the minimum, but they're not maxed either (I think like 50/100k, w/ a $500 deductible).

BTW, when I added my wife, then fiancee, to my policy last year, it went up almost $1200/year, but then I found a better provider and dropped that figure by $1k.

Don't know if that helps....

Oh yeah, we're with Unitrin Direct.
