I've been driving for twenty-one years and NEVER got a speeding ticket. But this past weekend my wife and I were headed out to a small town for a romantic getaway and I ran right into a speed trap. I thought I might get by with a warning, especially on account of the MINI, but it was just my luck to get pulled over by Barney Fife. This guy didn't even look twice. Oh well, I guess that's how these small town cops make their money.

We didn't let it spoil our evening though.

If it makes you feel better. Last week I got into an accident (4,000 of damage but driveable), and the next day I got a speeding ticket.

I've never had a speeding ticket in eleven years of driving, but I just got my second warning (first was 5 or 6 years ago), so I think I've used up my luck. This time, the cop was just standing at the side of Commonwealth Ave in Boston and pointing at people to wave them over. No radar, just his "estimate" that I was going 43 in a 30. He picked me out of a group of at least four cars; seems like it was just a bad day to be driving a red MINI (not that there are really any of those...).

Well, one ticket in 21 years probably won't do great harm to your insurance. On the other hand, Ants must be hurting bad...

As one cop told me, he stopped me just because I "looked" like I was going fast. Fortunately, this guy knew that that statement (without radar) wouldn't hold up in court...so after 15 minutes of roadside humiliation, he let me go. Yeah, this is one side of MINI onwnership that pretty much stinks.

Hummm, Chris, I wonder if the guy who stopped me for "looking" fast in NH is now working in Boston

I can't wait to go to court on this one. Oh, and I definitely will...

Sorry to hear about your ticket.

Since it was a small town, you might want to call the court and see if they have an option for you to pay a higher fee and have the ticket "disappear". Now, I'm not kidding about this. Some towns do that sort of thing as a matter of course...not under the table.

I received a speeding ticket in Darlington, SC. I didn't think I was speeding and remembered glancing at the speedometer. The officer said I was going 52 or 53 in a 35. I KNEW that wasn't right. He also stated that if I paid $50 on the spot, I would only receive one point on my license. That sent MY radar up.

If guilty, I take my lumps, but if innocent, I will fight. I told the officer that I didn't think I was speeding and that I absolutely knew for a fact that I wasn't going 53 in a 35. So, he handed me a ticket and we parted ways.

I called the court and asked if they allowed their officers to accept payment at the time of the ticket. The clerk said NO. I explained what had happened and asked if the officer was new. No, he wasn't. And her words..."He's one of our finest." Great. So, with that info, I explained to her that it would obviously be no use for me to come to court and contest the ticket, since it would be my word against his. She agreed. I asked if there was anything she could do to help me, given the situation.

Sure. She could make it all go away...disappear...never happened....for a little over $200. I forget the exact amount. Well, that's cheaper than a lawyer and a road trip, so I sent in my check, and the ticket never happened.

I couldn't believe the whole deal, but at least my insurance didn't go up. I felt like I was living back in a different era. Unbelievable.

See ya,
JS

Got my speeding ticket the 2nd week of motoring. That was 13 months ago. When I got home and looked at the ticket it said the car was a "Cooper". My SO said, is this what it's going to be like now that you have a MCS? Haven't had one since, haven't slowed down either.

Valentine One

And no lip about it being illegal in your state, speeding is illegal too!

Get one for covert ops.

Yep, it's on my list. In fact, I've recently decided taht it's going to trump any mods (pulley, intake, etc.) in the budget dept. No sense in making my car go faster if it's going to COST me in extra tickets/insurance surcharges.

When I got mine in April (rural Ohio 2 lane: 68 in a 55), the cop started the conversation with, "Have you had a ticket in the past 12 months? ...because you're gettin' one today."

What a jerk. I can't stand 'em. Just looking at them gives me the heebies.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

And then think about it, handing out speeding tickets has got to be the absolute worst part of the job for most cops. I guess I don't have the best attitude when I have to do the worst parts of my job either.

Ditto the Valentine 1. It won’t make you immune, but it does give you a fighting chance. It saved me this morning with a Sheriffs speed trap outside Ramona, CA using an instant-on radar gun. The V-1 gave me warning when the Sheriff “zapped” traffic ahead of me. I was able to scrub off 15 mph just in time. They do work!

That's my plan too! Driver modifications before MINI modifications. And the Valentine One counts as a driver mod

I've had citations and fix it tickets but never a speeding ticket and I speed all the time!

>>exhibition of acceleration. vrooooom

Whats that? racing or taking off at the light? Theres a stupid law in CA that says they can stop you for street racing if you "look" like your in a speed contest with another car. What if the other car just happened to go fast and you were side by side with it and it was a total coincidence? They can get u for racing and impound your car! There passing another law here in CA that says the govt. can confiscate your car and sell it if your caught street racing.

The cop that asked for $50, was he asking for a bribe? You could nail him for that!

wow remind me to never move to california. in ny if you get caught driving drunk they take away your car, which i totally don't agree with i don't believe under any circumstances should the state be able to take away property... but that one is easliy avoidable..

CA aint so bad, it just our laws and politicians that suck! I agree the govt shouldnt have the right to take away property. I know the DUI laws here in CA are also strict but I dont know if they take your car away.
