On the back of bottles of motor oil it says something like "continuous contact with motor oil has caused skin cancer in animal tests". Does anyone know if there are any ill-effects in continuous contact with the MINI brake dust, since many of us wash the rims by hand more frequently than changing motor oil?

Thanks for bringing this up.
Oil is derived from petroleum as in Coal Tar which is not good on human cells. Wear gloves, wash your hands, don't eat the stuff. It isn't food. External use only and all those nice things.

Brake dust- not so good. Bottom line- be careful, avoid prolonged contact, wear gloves, don't breathe it in.

Pretty scary stuff. There is a health hazzard potential here. Exercise due caution.

There is still Asbestos in Brakes. Don't believe it when someone says that's not true. Do some reasearch if you need to. It's still very common for mechanics to start having lung problems (mesotheleoma) in their 50's because of this.

These types of problems take years to develope after exposure. You should always wet down the dust before working on brake and clutches. Once asbestos enters the lungs, (it's like a fiber rock) does not break down but sticks everywhere, the membrane builds up over it which cuts lung efficiency. Then you have Cancer. It's likely it happens to both lungs together so if you remove one, the other is doomed shortly after.

Depends. Some BMW drivers don't brake-hence no dust. Others don't look at their wheels-hence no risk of exposure to brake dust. Some just buy the BMW but don't drive it much-again no dust-just house dust that settles over time.
And finally some people don't breathe so no risk for them.

Auto mechanics are exposed so take precautions and don't lick you wheels (too often). That goes for your pets too.

and family
