It was a little hot in LA yesterday (about 90), and I was closing my driver side window, it started bouncing.. Basically, it wasn't moving smoothly along the rubber stripping and it would keep hitting it and bounce.

This behavior stopped when the weather got cooler?

Normal? or add it to the list of things I need my dealer to look at?

Greetings!

The condition you are describing is not normal, regardless of temperature. We've had several weeks of 90+ weather in South florida, and this is the first I've heard of the symptoms you are experiencing !!
Best Regards,
Ron

This sounds like an incident that happened to me a couple of months ago . It was a hot/humid day and as I got in the MINI and started to drive off it started to rain so as I rolled the windows up, the drivers-side window started to "stutter" (or "bounce&quot as it went up. I noticed it right away so I rolled it down and rolled it back up again....same result.

A third time it went up smoothly as usual. I haven't been able to replicate the abnormalty again.

(Aside, sambusik, that sig makes me crack up everytime)

haven't had the window bounce problem, but i do have occasional problems with closing the door . sometimes the door isn't able to close because of the window not being aligned correctly. so i gotta turn the ignition and roll down then up the window. then i can close the door. anybody else have this problem? or is this related to the window bounce?

It happened to me last month and I know exactly how to fix it: attempt to show someone the problem and it never happens again!

nah, it's been good to me. I'm just keeping a small list of things I want the dealer to take care of when I'm in there next time

- speaker housing buzz
- driver seat creak

It happened to me. A crackhead broke out my window, and it was replaced by the dealer. When you raise the window, it goes to far and adjusts itself downward. The repair guys tell me that the window regulator was also damaged in the break-in and need to be repaired. Hope this helps!

the weird thing is it only happened that one time, I'll probably never be able to replicate it.

I think you are describing wher the window, as it is moving up, is stuttering or not moving smoothly. This as opposed to where the window, after it has reached the top, does a continued dipping or sewing machine type up-down-up-down for the uppermost 1/4 inch.

I have had both happen to me. The sewing machine motion was probably related to a faulty door sensor or water in the BC1 computer. The stuttering on the way up I am not sure about. It happened on my drivers side window, whcih just last week pooped out, as in, it stopped working. Took car to dealer and they replaced both winding motor and window motor controller. Window is working again now, and currently I have neitehr stuttering nor sewing machine problem. However, my dipping function upon opening door continues to disappear every now and then and I have to reset the auto dip about 1-2 times per week, even today after getting a new motor and controller.

Just be aware that there are actually TWO problems now being discussed on this thread.

The first (the one that started the thread) is a problem with the LUBRICATION of the wondow mechansim and/or something that contaminates the door weatherstripping (where the glass emerges from the door) that causes the window to stick. I'm not sure that "bouncing" is the best way to describe this. Rather, it's more a sticking and stuttering of the glass when you're trying to raise it. On my car, this is accompanied by a horrible screaming sound. Sort of like fingernails on a chalkboard. It only happens infrequently, and especially when very hot out. Not all cars have this problem, but it's related to the white streak on the window and was written about a lot during the winter (when the supposition was that it was salt).

To fix this, have your dealer check out the operation of the window raising mechanism and perhaps clean/replace the weatherstrip. I wouldn't, btw, be surprised if MINI ultimately issued a service bulletin about this as it does seem to affect certain cars rather obviously (at least the white streak part) but others not at all.

The SECOND problem is an issue with the window glass not "dipping" when you go to close the door. The first thing to try if you're having this problem is to "reset" the window. There are instructions on MCO about this. Try searching "window dip reset" to find the thread(s). Apparently this reset usually works, although some folks have had to have the window motor/electrics replaced.

sorry for adding to the confusion jsun, didn't mean to bring in additional issues to discuss!

I actually forgot to make the point I first thought of:

my drivers side window first did the stuttering on the way up,
and then about two weeks after that started, it failed. I wonder if the two are related, and if the stutter could be a problem related to the motor controller?

M.

Me too. Driver's side only when it's really hot. It's happened about three times.

My MINI is in the shop today for a few small things. I'll let you know what they say about the window stutter.

Everytime it's hot I get the squeal and bounce. Both are highly irratating. I tried fixing it by cleaning the inside of the weather strip, didn't help. Gotta see the dealer.

I have the same problem. Dealer said its unfixable and it is a result of the hot weather and/or tinted windows.

They replaced the window motor regulator. I'll report if I get the stutter again.

I can't personally speak about the bouncing when it reaches the top, but the screech and dragging has nothing to do with tint (I don't have tinted windows). Rather, it's a lubrication and or contaminated weatherstrip problem. My suspicion is that over time, the extra burden put to the window motor by raising the window through this stuff is eventually burning it out. It's counterintuitive, but for some reason, the stuff drags more when it's hotter outside.

See these two threads (salt streaks and white smudge ) from this past winter. I'm telling ya, it's the same thing...
