I think that at $6.00 each for the disposable filters you would have to drive your car for 300000 miles to break even. Assumtions are: $199 purchase price, 10000 mile oil change intervals and not considering the cost for cleaning materials and time spent cleaning the filter.
As far as performance improvement goes, what is the practical benefit? From what I understand, the original system works pretty well.
Just my .02

People emphasis on the materials crack me up.

304 Stainless - very common
T60601-T6 - very common
Viton o-rings - very common

So is their big claim that using a 304 mesh filter can be cleaned and paper can't? Is that really it?

If so, and that was best new product SEMA, I should really start inventing stuff and winning awards.

Seems easier to replace the filter than clean it.

And don't forget the time value of money.
This product is a great deal! For the company.

SEMA needs to change to once every 5 years... Every product in the site has been around for a while. The runner-up for Best New Interior Accessory prize at SEMA 2007 was a FLASH LIGHT!!!! (Link)

Guess the only thing worth seeing there is the girls...

Where's the best place to look for finding the OEM filters for $6/each?

Environmentally it's a good product. No oil filters to dispose of and the hidden costs we don't see associated with the disposal. Plus at the end of Mini ownership the filter can be resold to another Mini owner recouping some of the up front cost. Granted, one person using this type of filter will have minimal impact, but if millions did the benefits are incredible. I'd still like to see a lower entry cost before I can justify it's use.

With respect, gnatster, environmentally it's not great either. The small amount of oil going to a landfill in a drained filter is offset by the amount of surfactant and oil headed to the POTW when you wash the thing (or rinse with solvent and dump it in the woods or garbage). I'd rather drain the paper filter into the crankcase (the "unscrew and wait 5 minutes" routine) and dispose of the paper filter.

At least SEMA doesn't recycle the models... or do they? I believe some research is needed. Who's with me?

It would be great if it came with lifetime oil and I never had to change the oil again.

It does! Just never change the oil. When it dies, you'll know how long the lifespan is. Kind of like 'how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?'
As an added bonus, you'll get to sample the latest from Oxford (should you choose to purchase one.)
